I have been watching the tv series Jericho that is now on netflix. This has opened my eyes to this topic. I see where you would need to be able to protect yourself, family, food and water!!

I have no guns. I have never held a gun except a starter pistol that I used when I was in a play.

So far, even without a gun, I've never had to defend myself against someone with a gun. Don't really understand how having a gun is going to stop someone from attacking me or deter someone who wants something I have. My guess is that people who who want my stuff are going to come at it with guns blazing anyway and then we'd be looking at a shootout at the OK Corral.

I wish people weren't so in love with owning guns. It's depressing...

PS--Jericho is a fictional tv series, right?

i'm sorry i just have to answer in reply to bunnys statement--i am not in love with guns.a gun is just a tool to use and nothing more.if someone wants to kill a person or rape or steal they don't have to use a gun they can use anything that will hurt, maim,or kill be it a knife, gun, bat, etc, etc. a gun can stop someone from being a victim with at time just showing you have it.i have hunted all my life to put fresh meat on the table and to can it to or dry the meat.i have a carry lic. and around here we can open carry.sometimes just the site of someone with a gun will keep criminals away as they only prey on the weak and helpless. i refuse to be a victim.there are so many out there that don't care if they kill you just for what you have in your pocket-so wise up or you can be a victim.--no i don't love my guns but i will use them if it comes to protecting my home or family-and god forbid if i have to shoot someone to protect mine i will ---sorry for the rant--hugs to all

    Default guns, etc.

    Marlas:

I know you see guns differently than I do.

That's fine. You're entitled to your own opinion. Personally I don't want to live that way. But that's fine if it works for you.

I just said what I said because I really do mean it and also because I was reading this thread and it really sounded very pro gun. More pro gun than I'm sure is the case with the general popluation.

I just wanted to point out that not everyone thinks that way.

Personally, I wouldn't want to live (or survive--as I guess that's what we're talking about here) if I had to live and think that way. But I'm a pacifist at heart and would never kill anything, anyway.

We're all different and have to figure out our own way through life. But it does really depress me that people are so pro gun and I don't think there's anything wrong with saying it.

We have several guns and several rifles now, my husband is very knowledgable about guns, and he has shown me how to use one I am not very good and it is a good idea for where I live above a bar.

    Hugs Marla.

    Default .22 is very useful

Putting the whole controversial self-defense topic aside... I use guns to hunt for meat. Of course, I don't really have to do that as we have the means to buy meat. However, if things really "went south", knowing how to hunt and prepare wild game to eat would be a valuable thing.

I have a shotgun, a deer rifle, and a .22. The .22 I consider my survival rifle. The great thing about it is that the ammo is dirt cheap. $20 or $30 bucks for 500 rounds. So I can keep hundreds of rounds in the cabinet and if times get tough I will have ammo to take lots of game to survive. And it is great for keeping waskily wabbits out of the garden.

They have them for work, hunting, protection or sport shooting.

    I second this...well said!

Growing up and living in Alaska, guns are VERY common... I started shooting when I was 5...taught safely and responsibly. Yes, Dh and I have guns...several...and we can both shoot and reload all of them. We've both also had formal training.

We're one of the most dangerous cities per capita...really high rape rates. I either carry concealed...or don't go to certain areas at certain times of day. It is what it is...I'm not paranoid, the statistics are there for all to see. Yes, I know women who've been raped.

Would I use a gun if I had to? Yes, to save my life, my Dh's, etc. Without a doubt. Do I want to? NO...I hope it never happens. Better safe than sorry.

Along with people...very large animals are another factor up here. It's not safe to go on most trails without a weapon (moose, bears, wolves, etc.). Again...open carry or concealed carry...you just assume everyone is carrying.

I will point out - one of the highest rates of rape by area of town is the college campus area - where carrying a gun is *NOT* permitted. I don't take classes that go very late because of this fact...and carry a knife on me when I am there (yes, that's allowed). It's usually 3 or more rapes per week in that area (that are actually reported - many aren't up here - don't know why).

Now, if there was only a way to keep my 2nd amendment rights *and* get a college education at the same time...

yes, i have several guns. I buoght them initialy for use-
#1) In the event of a diseased animal.
I have shot 2 rabid racoons in 20 yaers, one wile atacking my livestock.
    #2) I enjoy marksmanship
I do not hunt but am capable if need be.
Am i capable of taking a human life?
3 yaers ago I was burgularized repetedly by the same man. That summer I went thru a world of stark realizations. He also left pornography in my home. I crossed a enormos line emotoinaly and became prepared to shoot a human being. If I came home and he was in my huose OR he atempted to enter my huose while I was home.
Tho the State troopers came uot here after each event this is the cuontry - it took an average of 20 minutes for them to get here AFTER I called them. My personal safty was up to me in reality.
Reality..very diferent than playing uot a remote senereo in yuor mind.
I wil not use deadly force to protect property, but I no that I wil to protect myself.

I've always wondered how the folks who are against guns would feel if they only had a gun in order to eat....hmmmm.... or even better, to feed their children so they wouldn't starve to death.

And then I also wonder if those same people are happy that the law enforcement have those weapons in order to protect them. I mean, if you're going to be agaist guns of all kinds, then it would seem to me that included the police and the military. Those two use thier weapons for ONLY the killing of non animals. They are used against humans on a daily basis. Nevermind that they people are defending themselves against their own demise. lol

And to let people know, those of us who do own guns know about those who are against it. We just don't make a big stink out of it like the anti-gun folks do. Whats the point? They won't listen, and we don't listen to their lame arguments, so why waste the time.

It's my RIGHT as a citizen of this country to own and use a gun. Just like it is to assemble peacefully and to speak my mind freely on any topic I wish.

A gun is a tool, a shovel is a tool, a hatchet is a tool, and all can be used to kill. My daughter was murdered with an axe handle and a tree limb. Beaten to death. Should we ban all axes and cut down and destroy all the trees in the world? that would be silly.

I will never give up my weapon. I don't care about bans or confiscation. It won't happen. Just give Thanks that we live in a country great enough to be allowed to do what we do on a daily basis.

Why do you think gun ownership is not the "norm"? Everyone I know has them and would fight to keep them, including me. Our founding fathers learned the hard way that Government was to be tolerated as neccessary but never trusted completely. Between these two posters, I don't think there's much I can add...except that I totally agree.
