Seems pretty neat and real easy to do.
When I was living ina 400 sf cottage, there was no W+D. I used a smal portable washer as seen here Amazon.com: Wonder Washer: Appliances followed by a dryer, which was really like a salad spinner. Amazon.com: Mini Countertop Spin Dryer Clothes Spin Dryer Portable Clothes Dryer: Appliances. Then I hung them to dry.

I think if you're going to make the washer - you may benefit from a spinner. It helped a great deal to dry the clothes faster. Otherwise, it will be dripping sopping wet and take forever to dry.

Let us know how it turns out.
