    Default large glass containers

Has anyone had luck getting large glass jugs from restaurants? I'd love to get a few for the pantry and have considered calling some restaurants, but am not sure which type would most likely have these jars. I know when I worked in a restaurant yrs ago, they had a lot of large plastic buckets with lids, but I don't remember large glass jars.

I'd definitely call around. They would, more than likely, be glad to give them to you. They just end up in the trash otherwise. I get all the plastic ones from a hometown restaurant, "The Hotplate" in Franklin, to use for storage of crafts and such. I'm gonna have to ask them about glass ones.........

I have a number of them, but you have to be careful which ones you get. Some of the pickle ones you can't get the smell out no matter what you do.

I just Javex, wash them good and put them outside in the hot sun. If the smell of the pickles comes out I use them to store pretty much anything in.

The ones that the smell doesn't come out, I use it them to store laundry soap. I don't like boxes and because we live in the country and I store stuff in our partial basement, I'm always afraid of mice getting into things. (Right now I'm using liquid Tide because it was on sale.)

I'm not sure how old mine are Sara and I'm not even sure you can get glass ones anymore. I've also seen them at thrift stores from time to time.

I picked up a couple at Goodwill. We use one for our change jar.

    Sara,

Try a Deli...They would at least have pickle ones.

I am not sure how to get the smell out, but I would try filling with Clorox & water & letting them soak with the lids on [it is probably the lid that smells]

I then would pour out the clorox..rinse..then...fill with water & vinegar...soak..rinse & wash in hot soapy water.

I think Mayonaise comes in lg. glass jars also.

    Have a good day.

Sara, my son the chef, says that they're always pleased when someone rings up to ask for their empty containers. He's brought some home - including some old wooden fruit crates. It's worth a few phone calls. If you have any organic restaurants nearby they might be the best place to start as they are more likely to have glass instead of plastic storage.

Have you tried a grocery store?
Sometimes the restaraunt and delli and bakery get things in them.

The diner where I work gets marachino cherries for the soda fountain in the one gallon glass jars. That is the only thing we use that comes in glass. Most of the salad dressings, etc. come in plastic jars now.
