No more Mrs. Nice Guy
As some of you know, we moved into a new home last week. We are surrounded by boxes, can't find the tupperware or one of the checkbooks, the kitchen is a disaster - you know, the usual moving stuff. Not life-threatening, just a frustrating couple of weeks.
My sister calls me (the one who got married in the reptile house of the zoo to husband #3 - you may remember this as the Crazy Realtive Holiday Swap thread) and basically invited herself, her new husband - who I have not met - and their combined EIGHT KIDS to come spend the weekend at our house!!!!!
Ordinarily, I say yes and rearrange my life for a few days, silently working on the ulcer that will someday kill me. This time, I said NO, and suggested a local hotel. I then proceeded to list all the local attractions for the kids that THEY could take them to while I unpack boxes.
I only had a little, tiny twinge of guilt over this, and I've completely gotten over it.
They went to the Indianapolis Childrens' Museum, and are now back at the hotel swimming - we even loaned them swimsuits!!!! And when they made a veiled attempt to get invited for breakfast before church tomorrow, I provided directions to the grocery with the 'best donuts'!!
I would never in my wildest dreams go 'visit' someone, dragging eight kids, if that someone was six days into a new house. I absolutely refuse to feel guilty about this, either.

I don't blame you and wouldn't feel guilty either!
The donut thing was funny.

You shouldn't ever feel guilty for saying NO to someone inviting themselves into your home. Period.
Good on you for standing your ground!

No offer to help unpack?
Stop trying to organize all of your family’s crap. If organization worked for you, you’d have rocked it by now. It’s time to ditch stuff and de-crapify your world.
If you're not using the stuff in your home, get rid of it. You're not going to start using it more by shoving it into a closet.
Use it up, Wear it out,
Make it do, Or do without. ~unknown
Because we, the people, have the power to build a better future. KH

I would not impose 8 kids on anyone for any reason except a real life emergency. Good for you for sticking up for yourself!!!!

Love this line.............
didn't know ANY groc. store had 'good donuts'...........????
GOOD FOR YOU MC!! You have every right to say no.
Personally..........I can't imagine expecting ANYONE to put up two adults and 8 kids............EVEN IF YOU WEREN'T IN MOVING MODE!!!!
'POSSIBLY' in the summer if/when the kids can all sleep outside in sleeping bags............but that is putting up 10 people!!.......not sure I would even have the FLOOR SPACE for that many people! enough beds??.......not a chance!

I think you should feel guilty: for not telling them it wasn't a good time for them to visit. But then again, you've proved that you are much more magnanimous than I could ever be in that situation.
All the best with the unpacking.
