We've been to NS many times over the years since we moved away. As I said, I have family and friends in the area. We are somewhat limited in where we can/want to live because of my health issues. I check in with doctors/specialists frequently.

I chatted with my DSIS#1, a doc down there, and she said I had three choices if I wanted to settle in the Maritimes: Moncton, NB, Kentville area, NS, or Halifax, NS. Those are the full service medical centres. Moncton is largely French now, so we won't go there (don't speak it). Kentville is smaller than Halifax but the roads are a nightmare to drive on! It's in the Annapolis Valley and is one end of the stretch of highway known as the Highway of Death for having the largest number of fatalities of any highway in Canada. And because both my DDs live in Halifax area, that's where we decided to go.

As for specific subdivision. That will have to wait until we move and look around some more. Meaning, yes, we'll be camping with kids until we rent an apartment short term.

If you're talking about moving in general ...any place has to be better than where we are now! The climate is the pits! We've lived here 20 years and don't know our neighbors. We do not fit in here. We've had enough! The best thing that can be said about this place is the house is close to a lot of things I like: shopping, recreation, businesses I use. But those can be found elsewhere...

I sold some rug backing today.

I'm off to watch the youtube video you posted SD.

Well the downsizing to NS may be off. News out of NS isn't good. The health care system is in chaos, mental health care is in crisis. Sufficiently so that an emergency meeting of elected government officials was called.

Also in the news was the ongoing issue with developers and building inspectors. They were building inferior condos. The rule of thumb is to not buy anything under five to ten years old, and make sure all repairs/renovations have been done to the unit. People have been out tens of thousands of dollars fixing up the mess left by contractors on brand new units!

So between those two things, I'd say NS is out...for now. Looks like I'm going to have to learn to freeze in the dark on the prairies in winter.

There are lots of other places to move to though, eh? What about moving to a cheaper place in your current province? Or just over the border from NS? Southern Ontario? I don't know, just yakking.

Whatever, it's disappointing to make plans and then find out it probably isn't going to work out, for whatever reason. BTDT, still mulling over our options with no good answers in sight yet. Although the storm warning for Spearfish at the moment makes us glad we're not living there yet.

Is the darkness much different from here, I wonder? We're not much farther south than you are. I hate the short days, too, but luckily they don't last that many weeks.

I thought your health care was national. I never realized it went by each province.

Be optimistic! A solution will present itself. You're in a good position right now because you have time to continue purging and also have plenty of time to research other solutions. And besides, maybe things will improve in NS before you actually want to move there.

Trust you SD! Yes, there are lots of other places to move to, but we're trying to stick to places with either family or friends nearby. That would be BC, AB, SK, NB, NS or PEI. Lots to chose from! I have one friend saying maybe it's all a message from God that I shouldn't move. Course that's what she'd prefer... Personally, I'm taking the time to purge, de-clutter, regroup, and sort things out with DH.

Canadian health care is federally funded but provincially delivered. Meaning the money comes from the Feds, and basic services are insisted on, but the provinces largely decide how to divvy it up and spend it. It's in crisis right across the country. There's not enough money to handle the aging baby boomer population.

I don't know how different the dark is. Up here, right now, the sun comes up at 8:30 AM and it gets dark at 5 PM in the afternoon. Mostly it's the overcast days that bug me. I've been using my Litebook for a few weeks now. We've had a lot of overcast days.

And the cold! Man! Right now we have a wind chill taking it down to -19C, which isn't all that bad. But we normally have no problem getting to -40/-50C including the wind chill, in January/February for about 2 weeks. Ugh! Can't even get out for exercise in that!

I wouldn't move to a condo just yet.
You also have a lot of noise and more people....are you ready for that?
Not to mention the association fees and the high cost of a new condo.
I would just stay in the new house that you built and sell the old house and land, or rent out your old house.
You could have the new renters care for the land or call a gardener to assist the two of you.

When is it time for downsizing? Well, for myself it is now. I already do live in an efficiency apartment and have for almost 10 years but soon will be moving to a 1 bedroom place about a block from here.

Yes, I will have some more room [more than I do now!] but still I feel the need to get rid of things that are not needed or are no longer wanted. No sense in moving those things and too, there's enough to move to begin with, without adding things I've no use for.

We downsized last September. Moving in to a single wide mobile homes worth a small addition. About 1018 Sq ft. There are two small sheds on the property for tools and garden supplies, the lawnmower and snowblower.

My husband and I are planning a major move when he retires in 15 years that will put us in a very small rental apartment at first and eventually into another single wide mobile home once learn neighborhoods. We want to move closer to our son and his family. Right now they are over 950+miles away.
