Hi there...my wife and I are literally just starting the seven steps (we just shut down our 401k even with our employer offering to give 3% for our 6%...gulp). We have no credit cards but are a couple years out of college with $118,00 in student debt. Combined income $100,000. Also have...

Because every hour I kept thinking...yup, another $10 or so to put towards my emergency fund :D That is what I kept thinking as that is one of my jobs that goes towards beefing up my baby emergency fund and after that all of those hours will go towards paying off my visa. I also have another...

I thought it would be fun to discuss how we all think of / plan to use our emergency funds (at whatever stage they may be!). Personally, my philosophy (which is definitely evolving over time) right now is: How much: enough for 6 months' bare necessities for the two of us, assuming ZERO...

I didn't even bat an eye when I had to pay for new tires unexpectedly this week. My DH's van seized up yesterday, and will require around $1000 to get it up and running. Two years ago I'd have had a nervous breakdown worrying about putting this on the card and paying it off. I hate to spend the...

We've managed to build up our emergency fund to about 3 months survival. I keep thinking of scenarios and wondering "where would we get the money for that?" Then I think "the emergency fund??" But I'm not sure - when do you all think it is appropriate to SPEND the emergency fund (in part or in...

Hello, Thankfully I have been receiving extra income, but am confused about how to allocate it. I currently have 150/1000 in EF. I also have things that I am saving up for. Should I just pour all extra income to EF or 1/3 to EF and 1/3 to other things I am saving for? Thao

The recession has caused a seismic shift in the consumer culture, converting die-hard spenders into savers. A growing number of people, either smarting from a job loss or spooked by the financial crises of others, are scrambling to get out of debt, establish emergency funds, and add to their...

When most people think of the word debt, they immediately think of credit cards, auto loans, student loans and mortgages. Those seem to be the most common debts in our society today. But there is another kind of debt that doesn’t get as much attention as the previously mentioned, and that is...

Ok. Bad month, actually it's a bad week. Between the tax preparer, the IRS, the dentist and the lawyer, 2/3 of DH's 2 week paycheck is going out the door for mostly one-shot expenses. We have some savings and will use that. The dentist has agreed to let us pay the $ in 2 pieces, which has made...

I was just thinking: Would it be better to use my TFSA as my EF savings account until I hit the yearly $5000 mark, and then anything over that, put into a regular SA? Wouldnt this save me $$$ on my 2008 tax return for the interest earned on the larger amount in the TFSA?

I know many people who are followers of Dave Ramsey’s financial advice. Since the economy has tanked, it seems like I’m seeing even more people joining the Dave bandwagon, looking for a way out of the financial messes that they have gotten themselves into. His “Total Money Makeover” and the...
