I truly love my husband, but sometimes I think there is not much light inside his head (in other words he's not too bright). Last night he gets off the phone with his dad and here goes the conversation that follows: him: I need some money. a lot of money me: how much money? him: $2000 me: for...

I didn't see one posted yet so thought that I would start a new thread on this :) . My goal is to get my baby emergency fund up and running. I received an income refund yesterday ( Income tax said that they didn't receive my form last year so I had to resend it this past November). I paid a...

Our EF should get us through about 4-5 months without income. Right now it's in the equivalent of a checking account, and gets no interest. I think I want to keep around $2000 in there but the rest of it, I was thinking maybe I need to put it to work. Actually my father suggested it - I'm not...
  5. Financial hardship
This is on behalf of a very good friend who was asking me for advice. I've never dealt with something like this before so I thought I'd ask you all. Any advice is appreciated. My friend is a graduate student in her 20s. Her mother was recently diagnosed with a very severe infection in her...

Well I was wondering when our "emergency" would happen, yesterday we had some light to medium rain and a few bit of thunder nothing major sounding really, but next thing you know BAM huge flash of white and loud bang, half the house went out power wise. Oddly one half was still on even, went and...
  7. Preparedness and Survival
Years ago I saw on line a plan for using 2 liter soda bottles to make an emergency survival kit. It had instant soup mix and hard candy in it. I don't remember what else. I wanted to use this idea with our 4-H group and would appreciate any help. TIA.
  8. Debt Reduction & Money Management
I have a question if someone can answer, we have some doctor bills that are in collection and some that aren't but if they aren't paid on prob will be soon..So if we have to build the emergency fund first, do we just let those things go into collection if we aren't done getting the first $1000?
  9. Debt Reduction & Money Management
After reading this article, I gave our efund some thought and based on things that *could* go wrong, I think we have a good amount. I thought about car repairs, hospital deductibles, appliance death, etc. We have a $3k emergency fund and are comfy with that. Anybody keep a higher amount and if...
  10. Debt Reduction & Money Management
I visit another board and commented about an emergency fund I was shocked at some of the responses I got, that they believe that I should open a line of credit and use that instead of saving for an emergency fund? Does anyone else think like that? Or do that? I'm actually shocked!! I would much...
  11. Debt Reduction & Money Management
Just a quick question my goal for my emergency fund is 5000$ which would end up being enough for 4 1/2 months of living for me and my dd. We get a garenteed 600$ a month so between that and the 5000 it would go 4 1/2 month without me having to really cut back (just what I currently add to...

Emergencies, :furious: we all hate them but we all know they are very real and DO happen so..... If you have an emergency story to share please do and maybe add the planning method and how long it took to refund it. My hope is as this thread grows it will help inspire others who may have had...
  13. Debt Reduction & Money Management
So I just started reading and following the Dave Ramsey plan in January. I'm 43 with a husband and 3 kids at home (ages 12, 13, 18). The reason we started looking at ways to improve our household budget is like many - we make a fairly good income so where's it all going and how can we do...

I am trying to figure out how much my emergency fund should be. The Total Money Makeover did not cover calculating emergency funds if you have rental property. I have 7 units total (6 rental, 1 house for me) Do you take a percentage of units and figure it from there? For example do you...

Hi I am following Dave Ramsey's Baby steps. I am currently at baby step 2. I only have $2000.1 left on my debt. I have been on beans and rice for the entire year to clear all my debts. And I can pay $1739.77 by the end of Dec 2010. I am still short of $261.33 This is after scouting and saving...
  17. Pets
I thought this might be a thought provoking question. I do, set it up many years ago. Instead of insurance, we take a monthly payment and put it in a savings account for the dogs. I'm glad we do. It paid for a five day stay in ICU for my dog. So, do you do this; or am I just weird?

Hey gang! Don't forget to post your updates to the Emergency Fund and Debt Reduction challenges. We need everyone we can get participating if we're going to hit our goals this year!

hey guys I have been following dave for a while but just recently got on board with the baby steps over the last couple months. I have $525 in savings right now wondering if I need to take it to $1000 or not. My only debts are my truck $7000 and hhgregg $600. I also have several sinking funds...

I have it from reliable sources that Christmas has been scheduled for December 25, 2010. I thought everybody might like to know, so it doesn't sneak up on you... wouldn't want you to have to dip into your emergency fund for it or... GASP... break out the PLASTIC. We don't do that around here!
