One of my goals for 2009 is to learn to knit socks. Is using circular knitting needles easier than using 4 smaller (don't know what the terminology for these needles are) needles? I am a visual person so any diagrams would be very helpful.

I've haven't done a pair of socks for years(when I was 12 and my Granny had to turn the heel)and those I did with 4 needles but a knitting friend told me recently that it is common now to use 5 needles as it aids in heel turning.Do any of you use 5 needles-is it more cumbersome-and does it help...
