Yes! I’m excited to get my herbs in and I’m going to try again with the potatoes, peas and strawberries. Of course this is months away still although it’s 51 degrees out and sunny rjght no which makes me want to get started. Lol. Not happening yet!

The problem I had with the potatoes and the peas was a lack of water when we were on vacation. That week was so hot and they just dried up. I was able to salvage a few peas which pulled through but that was it. Haha. A friend shared an Amazon link for some tube type things you fill with water and sink into the earth and it dispenses the water as needed so if you go away it’ll water itself. I will order those when we get a bit closer to planting time.

Dd loved the mint I grew for her (she loves tea) and this year I’m adding chamomile and researching some others I could grow for her.

CH where did you get the automatic timer? That sounds pretty neat. We have a friend come in and check in on Ginger every couple of days and she did water them but it was just so hot and so dry it just wasn’t enough. It really needs daily attention.

I finally took the plunge and bought an Aerogarden. Well, I ordered it and hope it gets here soon. I’m excited to start.

I also decided tomorrow I’m going to plant the seeds that I have in the little greenhouse planter thing I have so they’ll have time to grow before I put them outside once spring arrives. I picked up two bags of garden soil at Sam’s Club today so once the snow is gone I’ll swap out the soil in the deck railing planters and start fresh.

I am so ready for spring!

CH I love crocuses. They are so beautiful and they always put a smile on my face.

Rujerro I planted potatoes, peas and strawberries last summer on our deck in fabric planter bags and the peas and potatoes did well. The strawberries did nothing. They never grew at all. The deck / patio planting worked really well. I have my herbs out there too in planters that are attached to the deck rail. Id love to plant raspberries.

@Zhoen well darn it all. Can’t do much about location of the deck in conjunction with the sun. Our deck gets sun most of the day but towards mid afternoon the sun changes and it gets shady- best of both worlds. Do you have an elevated garden on wheels that you could move around the yard? I almost got one last year so I could follow the sun. But I decided to try the deck first and since that worked I didn’t pursue the elevated planter. Might be an idea?

Today is day one! Let’s see what happens next. Lol. I planted peas, chives, thyme and basil. It’s a nice looking unit. I left a couple of spots open for other things. I am not sure what I want to plant there. I debated strawberries but I’ve been thinking about that and leaning towards “not my best idea”. The unit came with a pack of preseeded herbs. I also bought a package of the seed pods with no seed in them and that’s what I planted the peas in. I have flat parsley, Italian parsley, dill, mint and Thai basil preseeded pods left. I am so excited for this.

SD the trellis attaches at the base unit vs the top. I have never used a trellis with the herbs but the peas will need it so I went ahead and put it up. Grow sponges? How do they work with the roots etc? These have what looks like dirt in the basket but maybe there’s a sponge underneath? I do have two bottles of plant food as one came with each package of baskets etc. I figured it would cheaper to get more locally vs ordering from Aerogarden.

@RedSpruce I saw the Farm units on the website and those were really pricy. This one was pricier than I’d like but I’ve been wanting one for a long time and I’ve kept my eye out for sales etc. They do have sales. You can sign up for their emails. My niece has the Sprout model and grows tomatoes in it. She is loving it. That one was under a hundred dollars (US).

SD yes, I’ll let you know how the peas do. I joined a couple of Facebook groups for Aerogarden and a forum online and I had read peas were possible so I figured why not? If it’s a bust, it’s a bust. This is just a fun project for me but not meant to be a money saver. I mainly wanted it for herbs so I could have fresh ones through the winter inside. My niece grows the cherry tomatoes in her Sprout which is pretty small. I would bet that regular sized tomatoes are too big, peppers too as you said. I did read that basil is very enthusiastic about growth. That is why I only planted one type (my kit came with Genovese and Thai) I only want one I’ll have to use a machete on.

@RedSpruce only ten seeds? Wow, that seems a little stingy. I’m hoping to plant the seeds I have that I’ll move outdoors for the summer. Basically just my herbs - mint, chamomile, basil, parsley, thyme, oregano, rosemary. I can’t do the potatoes and strawberries until it’s warmer out. Having another nor’easter Monday night through Tuesday. Sigh….
