Kim, hope you recover quickly.
Last week's car service was expensive due to various recommended extra procedures. Hubby urged me to get them done - reasoning being who knows when parts supply chain problems and labor issues will reoccur. He is unable to schedule his German-make car for service because the shop does not know if/when parts will be available.

I fell off the wagon. Once a year I take what is normally a free online workshop to recharge my creative juices. This year I am pushing through the time it is offered, working on preparing my wall hangings for photos and sale. In order to have access to it later I have to pay $47USD. I paid. This series of 21+ online workshops is just what I need for my annual artistic shakeup.

I also needed more of a specific type and colour of yarn to finish my wall hangings. So I put in an order for five more skeins with the company. Hopefully it will come soon, and hopefully it will be enough. Today I found out from an online friend that the yarn I’m after is often sold at dollar stores! I’ve never seen it here. I think she is mistaken. It’s $6.70/skein.

DSis is travelling the province and found another gallery, that only takes 20% commission, where she thinks I could sell my work. I’m not so sure. It’s a pretty small town off the main highway. I have a contract with another gallery that says I can’t sell my work with anyone else within a 60 km. radius as the crow flies. I’m going to have to check the distance out carefully. Also see if it’s worthwhile and a trustworthy gallery. Some owners are less than honest…unfortunately.

That's awful, Kim. It could have been any contagious disease, but some people are just oblivious. I know of 4 people now who've gotten Norovirus this winter, which is making the rounds, too, and they had no idea who they got it from. I hope you're better soon.

Stay at home day for me today. Catching up on housework, yay me.

Red, that's a decent price for that many workshop videos, if even half of them are useful to you. DH and I are doing some at an event this weekend, and one class each is costing us far more.

Yes @Contrary Housewife . That’s why I sprung for it. It’s a very reasonable price. Over 21 workshop with 21 different instructors. A very motivating time. You receive two links to different workshops in an email every day for 10 days. By buying access for the year I can spread out the workshops a bit, I hope, and get more from them.

@Spirit Deer You are doing awesome with money saving in so many areas of your home transformation. I’m always in awe of how frugal you are in reuse of items.
as for me I’m quarantined to home and not spending. Not much of an appetite and eating low fat. The guys are eating out of freezer and pantry. I’m lucky to have Paid Time Off hours to cover my days in quarantine

@Spirit Deer , I, too, am impressed with your ability to reuse, creatively come up with frugal alternatives, and your “can do” attitude towards your renovation! You rock lady!

@KimB, I hope you feel better soon. I’m pretty easy to find on the Internet, so I haven’t been posting photos. I really don’t want just anyone tracing my posts here back to me in real life. But here’s a piece I hooked years ago. I don’t think it’s been posted online before, so not likely to turn up in an image search. It’s the story of a family trip we once took. As you may or may not be able to tell, it was eventful.

Thanks for compliments. I do have a knack for finding bargains. I think a big part of that is just being able to flex, at least on some things. For example, today we finally found a fan/light for our living room. We couldn't agree on the big 70" fancy model for $310, so tabled the discussion. On our way to the cabinet aisle, we found a large stack of closeout ceiling fans for half price and got a model we both like, 52" but only $100. I'm sure we will be perfectly happy with the smaller, less expensive one. I can't explain the bargains that seem to find me though. That's just dumb luck. Part of that is when opportunity knocks, I answer the door. 🙂🙂

Where to start? Everything at Menards came with an 11% rebate, always helpful, and that included sale items and closeouts. We still need to spend thousands of dollars there, so using in-store rebates is no problem and equals real money in our pockets. We knew before we got there they had 2 saws on clearance, so we grabbed them first since they were floor models and there was only one of each. The chop saw was not on sale, but we asked if there was a discount for taking the out of box floor model. Yes, indeed, there was a $25 discount plus the 11% rebate, another $44 savings. Not bad, and we don't have a large box to throw away . They also had a display model 5" Worx circular saw. It was already marked down $17 to $52, plus 11% rebate, so not bad. Husby has other Worx tools, so by choosing that brand, we don't have to buy additional batteries, huge savings. I'm happy with both tools. Because of buying the chop saw, we have dropped the laminate flooring cutter from our tool to-buy list for a $150 savings. Because of buying the chop saw now, I will be able to use it to build the ½ wall for our living room myself, saving paying our 2 guys $100 each for the hr it would probably take them to build it. Saving $200 in labor, having the chop saw to do all the flooring vs buying the single purpose flooring tool, and with the discount and rebate, the chop saw is paying for itself almost immediately. Can't beat that.

Lowe's really came through for us, too. We found a small ding on one of the cabines we wanted to buy, so asked a manager if there was a discount. Yes, 10%, about $23 IIRC. As we were about to check out, a clerk explained how we could get further discounts by getting new CCs since our old ones had expired several yrs ago. There were 2 discounts associated with that, one for $20 and also 10% off the entire purchase. We couldn't buy all the cabinets at once because we weren't sure they would all fit in the van, so we bought 3, loaded them and the fan, saw we could get the other 2 in, so went back for those, too, as a separate purchase. I also got a new CC, same deal. It was all sort of complicated and a little confusing. We're not sure how much we saved but it was at least $200, always welcome, plus by getting new CCs, we will get 5% off the remaining $3,000 worth of cabinets we need, which is better than our usual CC's cashback deal. I love gaming the system. Of course when we got home, our financial watchdogs had left us each a message saying there had been unexpected activity on our account and we should call them to confirm it's not fraud. 🤣🤣🤣 Nice to know they're doing their job.

It was a successful day, if exhausting. We spent a lot but got enough rebates, sale prices, and deals to knock it down a few hundred dollars, so we feel like we did all right.

Went to a real live hook-in this morning. Sold two rug hooks. Income $40 CAD.

Talked to one lady wanting supplies. I invited her to come visit. She wanted an affordable way to get started. She’s currently using yarn. I told her she could come visit my studio and pick fibre from my scrap bins (I have two). I’m only going to charge $10/gallon zippered bag. That’s really cheap for wool fabric, but if she’s picking scrap yarn, it’s about right.

I’m scouting out a second gallery. Just not sure. They do not have insurance to cover work put up for sale in their gallery. My homeowner’s insurance is supposed to cover it. That may be the end of the idea right there. I’m tired of having pieces “walk”.

So yeah…this happened. Went for a drive today with Hubby behind the wheel. He drove to the community where the new art gallery is to have lunch at a well known restaurant. We had a very good and lengthy meal. Then decided to go for a walk to walk it off a bit.

We ended up walking right past the gallery. It actually had real art in the window. I was concerned it would be more like a craft/gift shop, where items “walk” on a regular basis. But this actually looked like it was an art gallery with high end craft and art in it. So we went in.

One and a half hours later we left!

The place was humming with activity. I was greeted by a clerk immediately. She talked to us a bit while we looked around. She explained the concept of the gallery. It’s a combination makers space and gallery…like a community art space…but run as a volunteer organization, with one lady in charge…the lady who had been emailing with me.

I was Introduced to her and asked point blank about security. They were very surprised and taken aback. 😂. They said “We’re a small town, we don’t have that problem!” They may not, but the people stopping in from other areas might. The lady running the show assured me they had only had one item stolen in the 15 years she’s done business, and she paid the artist back. Insurance is not in the contract because they never saw a need for it! But they do have insurance on the building and contents in case anything happens to it. Hmmm…

They took me on a tour of the weaving, rug hooking, knitting, painting, pottery and woodworking workshops. It was pretty 😎! It’s the first time in a long time I felt like I was among peers when it came to my creative side.

I quizzed her up about how they record point of sale purchases, and discovered I am definitely going to have to be on top of inventory. The key will be not giving her a lot at one time. Maybe 25 pieces…that’s it.

She was disappointed I didn’t have anything with me today, but I really wasn’t planning on stopping in at all! I just told her nothing was ready yet.

It was a blast! She definitely has a bit of a temper, and admitted to it in describing some of her interactions with townsfolk who oppose her plans. I’m going to have to deal with that head on and tell her specifically how to deal with me if she ever gets pissed at me. And also tell her if she ever wants me out of the gallery, to just tell me.

She is very direct and in your face. But also very enthusiastic about the arts and creating a space for artists. Her focus is on creating a space for the community to gather and make things. There are no employees - just volunteers. The focus is a can-do attitude and collaboration.

I think I’m going to try it and see. It’s only a 6 month commitment.

Anyone who thinks no one in small towns steals things isn't living in the real world. SMH. But it sounds mostly positive, so I hope it turns out to be a good experience and opportunity for you.

We picked up some more things at the repeat garage sale Saturday, most notably the 5" baby DeWalt circular saw I've wanted for at least 20 yrs. Of course it shows up 2 days after we bought a cheaper brand. Technically it was overspending but I bought it anyway. It was $25, really cheap compared to new or even eBay. FOMO rears its ugly head, and no, we're not returning the other one because Husby likes it.

I picked up a purse from the free box, thinking it might fit a tool that needs a case. Alas, no, but Husby has been looking for a somewhat larger murse and said he would like it, since he likes red. It was bigger than he wanted, and it had 2 short straps on the sides instead of one long one across the top. He's so lucky I have tools and skills. I think it looks more like a small messenger bag and less like a handbag now. I hope it works for him. At least the price was right.

Yeah SD. 😄 I’ll try her with some note cards and smaller pieces. If they don’t walk, then I’ll try some larger ones. My pieces are quite expensive, so there might be more incentive to steal them than pay for them. But the fact the sales floor person was right there when I came in the door was a good sign.

I need to update my books today, bake cupcakes for Hubby’s birthday (today), film a video, entertain friends, and celebrate Hubby’s birthday this evening.

It was a moving sale, so that was probably part of it. They had low prices and seemed to just want to get rid of stuff. It needed minor repair which I permanently fixed. And I think it was out of style, too, though I'm no expert on purse styles. It wasn't just free Saturday, it was in the free box a week ago Saturday, too, so lots of people didn't want it.

😔 I’ve been avoiding this thread.

Had a couple ladies over for crafting and one really dissed the gallery I was thinking of putting stuff in. She had a very bad experience with them. Third warning. Think I’ll move on to another gallery. At least it saves me a $100 membership fee!

When I mentioned the situation to a group of online artists I received a strong “no!”, based on her lack of insurance on artwork.

Updated my personal financial books. Paid my cc. Looking good. I spend a lot on business though. I transferred some money from my TFSA to keep my desired cushion in my checking account after I pay the professional photographer.

That’s it for now.
