If I were to incorporate the name of a trademarked item in my manuscript, is it enough to note it's a trademark with "TM", or do I have to get permission from the person holding the trademark to even write it the manuscript?

I am using Barbie (TM) and Poleconomy (TM). The last thing I want to do is get Mattel upset!!! Thanks!
