OMG, Anita Raper, are you kidding!? Just had to add that my chunky monkeys name is Ella, so of course we love that name. My other dd is Elyssa, pronounced with an E not an A like Alyssa Milano.

But really, some of these names just make you scratch your head and go "huh?"

OK this thread is cracking me up! In my family we have Sierra Rain, Mia Bella, Santino Vicenzo (called "Sonny" - I'm always thinking "OK, where's Cher?") and Rally Sage - all kids of my first cousins. I have a little cousin named Tyler and I like that name, but everybody has taken to calling him "Ty Ty" and I don't know why but it drives me NUTS! I can't stand it.
my sister and i have hebrew names which is not unusual except that we are not jewish LOL the thing is my mother wanted to name my sister Menasi Asagi (MEN-assy a-SA-Guy) so
I think it's a pretty name and don't see why it's difficult to remember??? Maybe if your family actually put some effort into it rather than criticizing it?

I know that probably sounds harsh but Jeez, it could be a lot worse.

If your message was to me then yes it did sound harsh
We are not going to make fun of the child, and of course we are going to call it by its real name.I just asked if anyone else felt the same
I apologize for being harsh, but honestly I was offended for the baby and her parents. You think she won't know that the family doesn't "approve" of her name?
When I was a kid our pastors at our church were Pastor Kiester and Pastor Heine, yes REALLY!

And I actually know a lot of Levis, and Joas, and Elsies, and, and. I live in Amish country, my blacksmith is Ivan, another friend is Leroy.

I also had a friend that volunteered at a childrens hospital, they had a girl come in, poor thing! Her name was Pajama! But, pronounced Pa-Ja-Ma, sigh, poor kid.

Also had a friend that went to a dentist named Dr. Toothman.

I should not have responded to the last post but it always throws me for a loop when there is a light hearted post going on ,everyone is telling their story and then somebody has to come on and say something that is harsh
Also, probably EVERY name could sound like a brand name or something else. It's not like your SIL intentionally picked a name to cause trauma to the child. She likes it and thinks it's beautiful.

As for pronunciation, there are tons of names that are difficult to pronounce if you're not used to it. NOBODY except close family pronounces my last name correctly, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't use it.

thank you for making me laugh again
when I was pg with ds my dh wanted to call him Harley
Our last name is David
he kept saying Harley david son get it lol
I said no lol
thank you for making me laugh again
No problem, I see this as light hearted too, and honestly, people SHOULD think before naming, the origional name in this post is unique, but not mean like many names I've seen.

BTW, I'm a Kris with a K, growing up this was NOT a common name, and my middle name had a Y where people would think there was an I, so I spent YEARS Telling people this whenever anything needed written down, it is NOT fun, I personally would not do something that would make a child "stick out" that way.

Now I'm just married to a russian/pollock and have a REALLY funky last name that gets mangled left and right, when people ask how to pronounce it we like to say "JONES" and watch their expressions, lol :king:

There was a set of twins my mom taught in school. There names were lemonjello and orangejello. Now do not pronounce lemon jello...it is la maaaan ja lo. and it is not orange jello it is.....or on ja lo....
Where did your mom teach? I heard about these twins years ago from someone who (I think) actually knew the mother! Supposedly there was a younger sister named TEFLON VELVEETA.:huh:

lol really? lol
I went to school with a girl named Crystal Ball. Sad really.

My name is a very common name--Nichole, but nobody ever puts the H in it. My middle name is Anne and no one ever wants to put the e on it.

By the way, I totally took this lighthearted as well.
My sister chose Biblical names for all four of her boys but not the typical Matthew, Mark, Luke and John... what kills me is that so many people (Christians!) ask her how she came up with them, they're just soooo creative. *lmao* She tells them to read their Good Book.

I have a very ethnic name, first and last, and I love it. I get compliments all of the time and I plan to use my first name for any daughter that I have and then call her by her middle name (DH and I love Pearl).

As for discrimination and names, I've experienced it, I was actually told by the woman that hired me that she was so happy to found out I spoke English at the interview. *eye roll* It's her idiocy and lack of education that makes her look bad and I wouldn't want to work somewhere or be acquainted with someone who would have bigoted thoughts about my name.
How about the baby who was named Female? pronounced Fe MAH lee

And I have a friend who swears she once taught a student whose name was Formica Dinette.
This thread cracks me up.

Had a co-worker once named Chaquita (pronounced "Cha-Kweet-a"). She got so tired of the banana reference that she shortened it and changed the spelling to Quida ("Kwee-da").

I also intensely dislike the name Bebe. That is such an adult name - fine as a stage name for an actress or dancer, but not a child.
oooh forgot....a lady in our small hometown named her daughter Shithead. Pronounced Shutheed.
