My family Christmas celebration is this Sunday. Trying something new this year, an Open House, due to the size of family & small house. My menu will be:
cheeseball, braunschweiger pate, dried beef ball, crackers & party bread
taco dip & chips
carrots, pickles, olives on a tray
dessert table will have- brownies, oatmeal bars, fudge, cereal cookies, choc chip cookies & candy canes, sugar free chocolates, gumdrops will outline the tray (soy butter used not peanut butter)
I will get out my punch bowl my Gr'ma gave me-40 yrs ago, & we will have sugar free punch & coffee.
What are you having? :coffee3:

Sounds great Ali! What time should we be there? :D

Can I offer one tip? Once you make your food, divide it in half and plastic wrap it for later so if you have 'shifts' of arriving guests...you can always put out a fresh tray of "x" that has mayo or needs to be kept cold/refrigerated. Its usually the dips and cheeses mostly. (example: open house is 8 hours - every 2-3, refresh the dips/cheese etc) Breads and cracker should be put out in batches as well so they're 'fresh' (ie not hard - for bread nor soft for chips) Those are easily replenish-able.

My gf hosted an open house last year - she had over 100 people pop by. She made a deal with the local Chinese food take out place and ordered party trays of noodles and chicken wings etc. She tossed everything out on the back deck in the snow to keep it cold, went outside with big glass bowls to scoop as much as needed and nuked it as needed. She bought Costco sized dips and did the same. She waited til people were hungry or had the munchies before refilling the food to help avoid waste.

I hope your open house is great!

On Christmas Eve when we get together with my dad's side of the family we always have Oyster Stew & Chili, and usually some ham for making sandwiches. Plus lots of dips with crackers/chips.

Mom's side of the family on Christmas day always does Prime Rib, twice baked potatoes & veggies. Grama always makes Baby Jesus' Birthday cake too.

we have the christmas buffet at my house. i make: meatballs or a ravioli/cheese casserole, stuffed quohogs, stuffed scallops, clam chowder w/crackers, hot and spicy chicken strips w/blue cheese, crab dip w/chips, a portuguese crockpot of chourico and potatoes (i ordered) and a red velvet cheesecake from bj's. sister joan brings the summertime salad w/shrimp, lg.plate of shrimp w/cocktail sauce. and her famous stuffed mushrooms. sister lorraine brings pastry..cherry cheesecake, lady finger w/ cream dessert....awesome...and bannana cream pie..dh's favorite

some other surprise things show up....but this is the basic menu that we have every year. these are our family favorites as we are all seafood lovers here. we also usually have scallops wrapped in bacon, and hot dog bite crescents....but we are scaling back this year as there is so many leftovers each year and dh doesn't want to eat leftovers for a week.....lol

Hehe, well trust me...if it were going to be more than the two of us, the filets wouldn't be on the menu LOL. I figure we've only got so many more years we can get away with doing things like this before we have kids and/or have to travel back to IN for holidays.

Oh, and my twice baked potatoes are really easy! I actually microwave them for the first "bake" and then scoop everything out, mix it with scallions, shredded cheese, sour cream, seasonings and stick it back in the shells. The second time they do get baked. But it's pretty quick that way.

We will be having a Cheese lasagna since I am a vegetarian :), salad, bread, deviled eggs and lots of desserts.
Mmmm, this reminds me of BF's mom's house on Christmas day. She would always make a homemade lasagna (that rocked!) along with a ham and a turkey. The ham and turkey was always too dry, but her lasagna was delish!

I'll be making appetizers on Christmas Eve here ... bbq meatballs, lil smokies, hot artichoke dip with assortment of crackers, herring and crackers, shrimp co**tail, flatbread appetizers, little hotdogs in crescent rolls, cheeses. I'm also going to make a pot of soup, I'm thinking either wild rice or french onion. My mom will bring cookies and pies. I think I'll make some kind of hot cider drink and maybe a cold punch.

Christmas Day, we'll go to mil's. She's having ham. I'm going to bring make ahead mashed potatoes and cranberries.

On Christmas Eve we have ham, potato salad, baked beans, corn on the cob along with a relish tray. Also rolls and desserts. Christmas day it's LO's. I started this years ago when kids were small and now is a tradition with Grands included. They wouldn't have it any other way. Can you tell we are a very casual family? lol

Yule starts on the 23rd this year but Old Man will be working and Diva will be sleeping over her Dad's house so we will start celebrating on the 24th.

Breakfast: Julegroed
4 cups milk
A couple of almonds, finely chopped
1 rounded teaspoon of butter/margarine
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup washed white rice
A pinch of cinnamon powder
1/2 cup thick cream

In a large saucepan, heat the milk until boiling. Add butter/margarine, then add the rice and turn down the heat. Cover with lid, and let rice simmer slowly for about one hour or until the milk is absorbed. Transfer to a non-metal bowl and fold in the cream and almonds. Serve in small bowls with sugar and cinnamon sprinkled on top.

Lunch: HM party sub and chips (we'll be playing games so I wanted something easy, yet fun)

Dinner: hm ravioli lasagna

red gravy (tomatoes, pork chunks, meatballs, sausages cooked in crock - think a meaty, chunky spaghetti sauce)
garlic rolls.

Dessert: pecan pie, moon cookies, log cookies and wassail

Hot Spiced Wassail (non-alcoholic)
4 cups cranberry juice
6 cinnamon sticks
5 cups apple cider
1 orange, studded with whole cloves
1 cup water
1 apple, cored and sliced
1/2 cup brown sugar

Mix juice, cider, and water in large saucepan or crock pot. Add cinnamon sticks, clove studded orange, and apple slices. Simmer mixture for 4 hours. Serve hot. Makes 12 servings.

YULE MOON COOKIES
1 cup butter
1 1/4 cup sugar
2 tsp. grated lemon peel
1/4 tsp. salt
1 1/3 cup. flour
1 1/2 cups grated almonds (blanched)
1 tsp. vanilla

Icing:

2 cups sifted confectioner's sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 T. water

Cream together butter and sugar until fluffy and light. Add grated lemon peel, salt, flour, grated almonds, and 1 tsp. vanilla; mix thoroughly. Place dough in bowl. Cover and chill thoroughly. When dough is well chilled; or next day, roll out dough to 1/8" thickness and cut with moon/crescent cookie cutter. Place 1/2" apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake in preheated 375 degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes.

Icing:
While cookies bake, combine confectioner's sugar, vanilla and water. Spread over tops of cookies while still warm, but not too hot as icing will melt. Thin with additional drops of water if glaze is too thick.
Allow cookies to cool. Yield: 10 dozen cookies.

YULE LOG COOKIES

1/2 cup Brown sugar, firmly packed

3 Tablespoons Butter or margarine, softened
1 Egg
1 cup All-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon Baking powder
1/2 teaspoon Ground cardamom
1/4 teaspoon Baking soda
1/4 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon Ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon Ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
Red and green decorator icing

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

In a medium bowl, beat the brown sugar and margarine until blended. Add the egg; beat until well blended. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda and spices; mix well. Divide the dough in half. On a lightly floured surface, roll each half of dough with your hands to make two 10 1/2-inch logs; flatten slightly to 1 1/4 inches in diameter. With a spatula, place the logs 2 to 3 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Dip a non-serrated knife in water; score each log diagonally at 3/4-inch intervals. Bake for 11 to 13 minutes, or until set and no longer moist. Cool for 1 minute. Remove from the cookie sheet; place on a wire rack. Cool for 5 minutes. With a serrated knife, cut the logs at the scored lines.
Cool completely. Decorate each cookie with decorator icing to resemble a holly leaf and berries.

On the 25th, we will be having dinner at the Outlaws house but I will be making a Wagon Wheel for breakfast.
