Cops called on couponing mom

5348 Views 59 Replies 44 Participants Last post by  chevy_chick95
I woke this morning to late to get ready for church. My friend who is my neighbor went to get her coupons this morning at 5 am. Well I gave her $10 to pick up papers for both us. Her hubby is unemployed right now. So she had a total of $20 dollars because her mom gave her ten last night when she brought grand daughter home. So this morning she went to 5-6 different places for our coupons. By the way I usually stop a 2 papers. Well some woman followed her home and called the cops saying that she stole newspapers. She was mad because she got the last paper. The cops came did not ask to come in just barged in when she opened the door & searched her house opened drawers, cabinets, looked under beds. Seen 20 total newspapers and told that was excessive. That anyone with a binder needed mental health help. her husband told them that was her hobby and it was her business. They own their home and have savings that they are living off of. She is couponing to stockpile and because she likes the products she uses. She is also better at it than me and gets most of her stuff for near free or next to nothing. That stupid show has caused discrimination for couponers and to people who have larger discerary incomes that can afford more items. They are those who are stupid with it. We are not.

The newspaper could easily have checked to see if there was money in the machine for all the papers before the cops went on a rampage.

I hope she files a suit against the woman who followed her home and I hope she files suit agaist the police also. They had no right to search her whole house for just some newspapers.

WOW.... It's one thing for her to be questioned....totally another to have her house searched...that is crossing the line as far as i'm concerned....
I could call your local newspaper and share with them this experience. You could even call the tv news.

That's ridiculous. They can't barge in someone's house without a search warrant.
The Constitution means nothing to the "authorities" anymore. It seems that with the re-passing of the Patriot Act, the cops can do whatever, whenever, and claim they were acting "with cause". It's revolting and it's happening everywhere in America lately.

Even worse, if they do pinpoint you, God help you if you try to cite your Constitutional rights or record the police officers' actions in an way. They can beat the daylights out of an average citizen because they "resisted."

This is an obvious abuse of power. I hope your friend doesn't let this go. People need to stand up and say no or the Constitution will soon be absolutely meaningless.

I'm just disgusted that this happened to her.

easy solution
have the sunday paper delivered to your house.
Also, if it was me? I'd start buying my papers at a newstand or convenience store or someplace, where I can get a receipt!

If i was her..I would be taking it further...

did not deserve to be treated like that and if i was her i would make sure to do a write up in the paper etc with everything that happened and everything that was said...

She needs to follow up with the media and with the city council and.or mayor's office. Maybe try and find a pro bono attorney to take on her case against her false accuser (stalker???) and the cops for illegal search and seizure. This is the kind of story the media would have a field day with!
I misspoke it was 10 he counted them I thought she said 20. But still searching her house over the top & his atitude saying she need help because she had a binder

That was it...the re passing of Patriot Act. Thanks Daisy girl
That lady and the Cops have nothing better to do than raid someones house for buys newspapers??!!! The lady that called them needs to get a life..
I hope she sues and I hope she wins.
Well, I was just going to browse on my first trip to Frugal Village...but I saw this post and my blood boiled!

I am Denel, and I live in NW Alabama. My hubby got me hooked on the Extreme Couponing show. We are in desperate need of doing something with our finances...so my wheels starting turning. I am just getting started...but I figure if I can save even 50% of my grocery bill, that would be a huge help.

Now...about this insane situation...

An editorial needs to be done, at the very least. Maybe it could also include something about individual responsibility and how people are getting so out of hand that an individual would actually follow someone home and call the police over supposed stolen newspapers. And that there would actually be a situation in that area where newspaper theft is a concern. I mean, come on! Really?

A complaint should be filed about the woman who followed her home...hey, isn't that considered stocking?

I also would complain about the police entering the home without permission. Even if they do nothing about it, get it on record that you did not invite them in and they did not have a warrant. The one woman's phone call warrants a visit, but not an invasion. They could have stood at the door and talked with her. There was no imminent danger of someone being hurt.

Also, a separate complaint about the comment about needing mental help. In the current economy, I think those who do not try to save money for their household need mental help! That was just plain wrong!

Hope this doesn't deter her from working hard to save her family money...especially if they have an unemployed household.

The cops have nothing better to do then search a home for an report about newspaper stealing. Give me a break. I would have told the cops to get real job. That is just nuts.

My 1 son is a cop. This Patriot Act has really taken the rights away from the every day citizen.

that makes me so mad! I can't believe some lady had nothing better to do than follow your friend home.

To avoid this nonsense in the future, can you get the Sunday paper delivered to your home? I know the paper I subscribe to gives a discount off their retail price. And it saves on gas because it's in my mailbox every morning.

That makes me so mad that they barged into your friends house for what....$20 if she had stolen it? If there is a theft on that small scale wouldn't it be considered a misdemenour anyways?

Big Brother is getting way too BIG. Imagine being told that you can't buy 20 newspapers because it's too many. What's next? Telling us how many kids we can have?
