Cops called on couponing mom

5348 Views 59 Replies 44 Participants Last post by  chevy_chick95
I woke this morning to late to get ready for church. My friend who is my neighbor went to get her coupons this morning at 5 am. Well I gave her $10 to pick up papers for both us. Her hubby is unemployed right now. So she had a total of $20 dollars because her mom gave her ten last night when she brought grand daughter home. So this morning she went to 5-6 different places for our coupons. By the way I usually stop a 2 papers. Well some woman followed her home and called the cops saying that she stole newspapers. She was mad because she got the last paper. The cops came did not ask to come in just barged in when she opened the door & searched her house opened drawers, cabinets, looked under beds. Seen 20 total newspapers and told that was excessive. That anyone with a binder needed mental health help. her husband told them that was her hobby and it was her business. They own their home and have savings that they are living off of. She is couponing to stockpile and because she likes the products she uses. She is also better at it than me and gets most of her stuff for near free or next to nothing. That stupid show has caused discrimination for couponers and to people who have larger discerary incomes that can afford more items. They are those who are stupid with it. We are not.

Our neighbor is on the city council meeting and is bringing this up at the next council meeting. Should not have gone in her house if she did it was not a felony. It was $20 . & she paid for them. Say she was mentally ill for that many newspapers
Mad

All you are trying to do is survive and feed your family. When did that become a crime. That makes so mad
I'm not so sure this had anything to do with the Patriot Act, maybe bored cops and a nosy person....but the Patriot Act sucks a big one anyway. The story just seems weird.
You must have no crime in your area if they are policing newspapers. Seems like there would be a theft , murder, or something more important they could be doing.
I don't have much of a problem with the cop-caller. She thought a crime was being committed, one that you admit is happening in the area, and she called the police. Taking extra newspapers wouldn't bother me, but it apparently did this woman.

What the officers did, however, is a whole different issue. If it went down how she said it did, there's a big problem there. Complaining to the police department likely won't get much accomplished, if anything. The media might take an interest, though.

Suing would be a waste of time.
The police ignore drug dealers here and other than speeding & a occasional shoplifter really no crime except druggies and it is ignored

The reason I related this story to the Patriot Act is because it has widened the scope of police powers, allowing a search like this to occur without fear of legal repurcussions. :horse:

Just saw this, WOW!! I would have been so shocked to have them in my house like that, questioning my hobby! What if I also used them for paper mache'? hahaha

Sorry that happened to your friend.
This article explains a bit more about the Patriot Act and other similar laws. Warning! Somewhat political!

no wonder yahoo news yesterday was reporting newspapers as being one of the ten things that will be going under soon. They should be happy people are wanting to still purchase the paper if only for the coupons, instead of just getting news on tv or the internet. If the weekly paper is as tiny as the one in our area (seriously, it's 3 pages through the week) then they should start trying to put coupons in every day to keep sales up. As for the mentally ill comment, what the heck is wrong with trying to keep some of your own money in your pocket and not those of the greedy companies that seem to want to control everything?
One of the craziest things I have ever heard. Like others have said, kind of scared to get my own paper(s)... Hope there is a resolution to this mess. I cannot believe she was followed by an angry customer.... Sheeesh.. Maybe SHE
(the lady who followed your friend) was going to steal the papers.. (just kidding)... Good luck!
That's terrible! I am so sad for your friend, that must have really shaken her up! I would SO call the media, they would be all over this!
All I want is one paper, for the coupons. However, I keep getting the paper and find out the coupons have been stolen out.It gets old. I might try to lift a candy bar to make myself feel better.
Big Brother is getting way too BIG. Imagine being told that you can't buy 20 newspapers because it's too many. What's next? Telling us how many kids we can have?
Ssssh! They've already mention that...look up Cass Sustein(sp?).....& what he believes...he's not the only kook within the administration trying to figure out ways how to reduce our population. (not trying to hijack your thread or turn it into something political)

I get my papers at the convenience store & I always have to check inside of them first, b/c there are some that won't have the inserts when they'r suppose to.
I bought 5 papers and some guy behind me asked if I was opening a newstand. I gave him a look. And he got all defensive saying he was just making small talk. There was probably 50-100+ papers still in the store. I made sure I got my receipt in case he called the cops.
Newspaper distributers don't necessarily get enough inserts to match the number of newspapers they get. My little brothers delivered papers and every sunday morning they had to put the ads in the newspapers themselves because they just kind of threw the lot at them and told them to sort it. Sometimes they ran out. Sometimes they had extra. If the newspaper doesn't have enough inserts for every single paper, subscribers get them first and they'll leave them out of some of the newstand papers. Do'nt assume your inserts are being stolen just because they're not there.

Now that you mentioned that, I remember helping with my parents' paper route & we had to do the same thing - it was a pain in the butt.
If I saw someone with multiple papers it wouldn't even cross my mind that they were buying them for coupons, much less stealing them. My first assumption would be that they contained a birth announcement, obituary or photo/story about a family member and they wanted extra copies to share.
wow..unbelievable.
