~I have a hutch that was given to me this week that is really badly in need of painting. I'd like to try that great shade of black for tables and hutches that seems to be in all the home magazines. Can anyone recommend a method, paint or finish that they've used to get this look? I've done picture frames and wood boxes but this will be my first furniture refinish so I'm a little confused over where to start. TIA!~

The color I think you are speaking of isnt really black its charcoal! And you need to use a satin finish. Just sand the furniture, prime it with a dark tinted primer and paint it with a brush. Use an enamel for two reasons. A, you will get a smoother finsh and B. its more durable. I have paited a couple of things this way and I love it. GOOD luck.

If you want the antiquish/primitive look, when done and dry, sand down the piece with light sandpaper, showing a little rustic charm :)
