I have been stock piling along with my food and HBA sheets and towels and hand towels , wash clothes , band aids , first aid items , books , blankets and sweaters . Among other things, I have been finding really great deals new and used on these items I really do not like paying full price for any thing hate doing that so if I find 2 or 3 of an item that is reasonable and in great shape why not have 2 or 3 ? I have been finding brand new still in the package pillow cases , brand name towels and such at the S.A. for under 2.00. Does any one else do this or am just crazy lol:confused:.

I dont think those things are strange. I have a huge bookshelf in my bedroom and it is full of books many of which I havent read. To me they are journeys waiting to be taken. I love to be surrounded by them . If I found an awesome deal on something that I normally wouldnt buy in sets or more , so what. If it is cheap enough or better yet free and will be used then I say go for it.

I had an uncle whom lived through the depression. The years following he lived quite frugally and had built up himself to be quite a wealthy man. My Aunt said that he had a strange habit that she was positive was because of living through the depression. He bought 2 of everything. If he bought a set of pots and pans, he bought 2, if he bought her a Winter coat he bought 2. She found it quite odd but he said, "What if one breaks, or wears out? You'll need another one". So he stockpiled 2 of everything he ever bought.

I took care of my Aunt the last years of her life and when she passed I had the responsibility of exacting her will, cleaning out her apartment, funeral arrangements, ect. Her apartment was a treasure trove of unopened boxes of dishware, pots and pans, bedding, shoes, stockings, you name it.

Myself, I find that I keep quite a few sheets tucked away. I stockpile things like face cream, perfume, body lotions, vitamins, medicines, first aid stuff, hats, gloves, scarfs, and I think it might be more of a collection then a stock pile but I have many handbags, clutches, head scarfs, hats & shoes. I've never paid full price for any of them with the exception of shoes. My Mom taught me that your wardrobe could be slim, but if you had acessories you could always change your look. So maybe it's a bit of a stockpile thing.

For some of it I don't even think of it as 'stockpiling'........it is simply a 'weakness' I have.......yes, I am the same (almost, none new) with sheets. I have put a stop to it.........finally. But I use four different kinds/materials of sheets throughout the year so guess I justified it that way. The one that I only have one set of is my t-shirt sheets...all the rest I have at least two, including my fleece.

The other thing is kitchen knives. Have a drawer full!! I keep saying that I will clean out that drawer and toss the junk from years ago but haven't yet.

I think I have FINALLY gotten a handle on my 'kitchen gadget' weakness. Haven't bought any in a long time.......not even at the dollar store!

In the past, what I have done that was a little strange is when I see something 'changing'.......usually dropping in ounces, etc....I will buy lots of it. When bleach was dropping down from one gallon I stocked up at sales. By the time all the stores had the smaller bleach containers I had something like 15 gallons. Did the same with toothpaste when it was dropping from 8 ounces...........just finished the last tube about 2 weeks ago.

I stockpile shoes. 3 seasons a year I wear vans tennis shoes. I have to have good food support and these shoes are really good for walking and standing. So, I have 2 pairs that I bought for 10$ a piece a couple of weeks ago and when Autumn arrives I'll bust them out and go and buy two more pairs.

I am am a "must buy two of those" kind of person! My partner finds it strange. Recently, prior to the heatwave, I spotted a pedestal fan in Aldi for only £7.99. I really wanted to buy two at that price, but hesitated because I knew he would be saying "why do you need to get two - blah blah".

How I regretted ignoring my "must buy two" as we had the most horrendus spell of hot weather shortly afterwards. I could seriously have used the fan in our sitting room especially on the pedestal and at £7.99 it was a snip. You could not get a fan for love nor money, the shelves were all cleared out. Luckily I did have a spare table one!

In future I shall follow my two instinct for sure.

Count me in for buying in 2s. Not household, but blouses and tops. I find it pretty hard to find nice clothes in FL, so when I do, I'll buy 2 the same in 2different colors. I even think that's wierd! That's changed recently since we got Kohl's here now, not only nice clothes, but 80% clearance racks everywhere..woo-hoo :) But for a long time, it was either you wore Mickey Mouse or dressed in mature woman's clothing :(

But back to the topic....my kids call me the "Lamp Lady", and for very good reason LOL. I simply can't resist a beautiful lamp, at least if it's priced right. I truly can't count them. I also have many clocks, pictures, curtains, frames, room decor, all collected and stored in our spare room. I can't help it lol! When something catches my eye, and it's cheap, I'm probably going to buy it. (have you ever been to kirkland's?, oh my) Anyway, it's almost as if I'm living that dream I had to become a designer ...Idunno! But at least the stuff gets used., even if it IS later than sooner. It's great though because, I'll get an inspiration to re-decorate, and somehow I can pull off my ideas with stuff from my "deco-den" HA! I just re-arranged the family room, and I'm lovin' it! Didn't spend another dime either, and I'm not done yet :)

My other weakness is dish sets. Can I ask how many you own? I have 6 full sets. EEK! But I'm tellin' ya, I practically stole them. (except for the italian ironstone from hubby) Can't blame ME for that one though...hee-hee!

This was a fun and eye-opening thread scooby!

Theresa :)

I feel better now I 'm not the only one lol , my DH always says do we really need another one ? Yes we do lol. Our vacuum cleaner died 3 weeks ago I refused pay 40.00 + for a new one at Walmart ( I used the broom in the mean time) so I waited til I found one at a yard sale and I did for$ 8.00 a Kennmore whispertone with ton of bags ,so now I'm looking for another one just to have. The books I collect I like to read in the winter it gets really snowy / cold here nothing like curling up under the blankets when it is 40 below and the snow is blowing with a good book.I know I'm not crazy none of us are we are the smart ones. I like being prepared.
I also have a weakness for clothes love it when some one pays 50 - 60 bucks for a shirt or pants and it ends up at a used clothing store or the SA and it cost 1.99 to 3.99 . Thanks for sharing .

I am guilty too. I stockpile everything! I have a ton of books I haven't even read yet, running shoes (when I find a good deal at Goodwill) because I really wear them out fast, all HBA products, dishes, towels, but I do buy things at Goodwill so it saves alot of money. I figure if I see a great deal at a thrift store I better buy it now because when I need it, it probably won't be there! :)

Great topic! I too like to keep a few extras on hand including crossword puzzle books etc, regular books, blankets, towels, candles for power outages, matches and lighters to light candles, decks of cards, board games, ladies hba items, baby wipes (but no baby lol), extra kitchen appliances, plastic utensils, batteries, flashlights, battery powered radios, socks, paper plates/cups, tools and lots of cleaning supplies. I try to plan for no electricity and/or no water. Thanks to all for sharing your lists - I may have to borrow some ideas ;)

Office supplies - in my mind, you can never have too many notebooks, pens, erasers, or file folders, or tape or labels or.......

If I find shoes that are comfortable, I will buy at least 2 pairs and if I can get a good sale I will buy 3. Good comfortable shoes are hard to come buy. When Easy Spirit discontinued a line of shoes 10 years ago I bought 2 pairs in every color. 8 pairs in all and wore them out!

I also like to keep a supply of tablecloths and flat sheets, they come in handy for lots of things. When they throw the plastic decorator tablecloths on sale for .50 I buy several at a time.

Dh is a stockpiler of garage stuff. And it has certainly come in handy the last few months.

-I found a big bargain on good-quality kitchen towels last spring at Big Lots. Lovely big, thick, Egyptian Cotton, not those thin kitchen towels that you get primarily for "show" at most places these days. We actually USE kitchen towels for drying dishes, so maybe I'm a bit on the picky side... Every week I would buy as many as I could squeeze out of my budget until there were no more in stock. I'll probably never need to purchase kitchen towels the rest of my life.

-I recently purchased another Zojirushi Bread Machine when King Arthur had free shipping. It's a MUST-HAVE for me. I also have a FoodSaver in storage I got 50% off at Tuesday Morning. Wouldn't be without one of those if I could help it either. I figure with the age of my currant models and the government determined to plundge the country into inflation, they will be earning more interest than money in the bank.

-I have almost every loaf pan size available, and in a number of different finishes. I've used many of them as a demonstration for using the wrong size pan for the dough amount in bread classes (a common mistake with new bread makers). Or demonstrations of differences in breads baked in different types of loaf pans. Good thing they nest together.

-At the end of winter I stock-up on gloves/scarves/hats. I wait until they are generally 75% off (or more). Most of these I donate to schools who hand them out to kids who need them. I do the same thing at the end of summer sales. I have gardening gloves, seeds, pots/planters - all kinds of things - at a fraction of the price.

-Yet one more person who has a collection of plastic and flannel-backed plastic tablecloths purchased for 50-cents each. We've used them not only as tablecloths, but drop cloths and many other things over the years.

-And don't get me started on books... The home we lived in for 23 years and raised our kids in had a library (floor to ceiling book shelves) and I owned thousands of books collected over the years. It was the go-to place (this was before most homes had computers) when the neighborhood kids needed a book, a place to do research, a quiet place to study. I have since donated thousands of books to different causes, libraries, museums, and church libraries... A former boyfriend of my daughters always said if I ever got rid of my library, he wanted all my Cliffs Notes because he would never have time to read all those books in their entirety - we'll he's now the proud owner of them...

-For many years I would buy recipe collections (usually in 3x5-inch index card type boxes), or interesting empty recipe boxes, at thrift stores and garage sales. I was going to use all the fun boxes for the cover on a cookbook I planned to write, and never have. I was also going to use many of the recipes I'd found in the collections. It just killed me to think of all the work to accumulate those recipes only to have them unloved and unwanted...

I'll probably have enough fountain pens when I die to build my coffin and enough ink left to float it. And they can pack me into it with my yarn. I should probably be embarrassed that my serious stockpiling is weighted toward entertainment, but I'm not.

Linens are definitely not on the list. I do have a few extra towels, but only one set of sheets. I guess I should get another eventually, but if I wash them and put them back on the bed I don't have to figure out where to store them!

Don't laugh, I stockpile toilet paper. I think it comes from growing up poor and often running out. So when I have coupons and sale i buy buy buy. I bet I have 100 rolls right now. Husband laughs about it all the time. If my bathroom sinks ever leak I am in serious trouble.
