I've heard a lot of pros and cons regarding the flu shot... I'm looking for advice as to whether or not my hubby and I should start getting it...

Thanks in advance!

I am diabetic, have neuropathy and kindey disease so I get one every year. I also have to get a pnuemonia shot every ten years. I have never had a reaction or any problems from either shot. DS has reactive airway disease and has been getting the shot for years as well. DH gets the shot and DD does the inhaled vaccine because my doctor recommends that all of my immediate family members get vaccinated for my sake. None of us have ever had any reaction and none of us have ever gotten the flu.

Only you and your doctor can decide what is best for you. I get them every year-- as I'm an RN and exposed to the flu many times. If I brought the flu home, it could kill my hubby. He doesn't get the vaccine, as it's contraindicated with his medical condition.

A pneumonia shot? I've never heard of that? I had pneumonia (viral) VERY bad when I was 18/19...it lasted 6 months...the doctors gave up on me...told my mom there was nothing more they could do. Well, thank the good Lord I survived...but have a crappy immune system as an after-effect. Can you tell me some more info about it?

FrugalAlaskan,

Here are a couple of sites that cover the basics of the pneumonia shot. Hope it helps some. At one time I had a link to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) website that gave lots of info on the vaccine. Unfortunately I cannot find it now.

I had never heard of it before I was diagnosed with all my conditions. Then my doc insisted I look into it.
Thanks so much!! :D I'll check into it!

I've had the flu 3 times in my life. ....the last time was 8 years ago and was the worst. I had a fever of 104 for 5 days and it finally went down to 101 for about another week. I was bedridden and out of work for over 2 weeks! I never want to go thru that again if it can be helped. I've been getting a flu shot every year since then.

The only side effect I've had from the shot is a sore arm for a day or so.

When I was younger I wasnt a diabetic but my mom was and as a precaution we all had to get one. Now its kinda hard NOT to get one since they're free and given everywhere here with several clinics that arent doctor's offices. I am now diabetic so its very highly recommended but I never had much of an immune system anyhow. This years flu season started late so when I got my shot on time I was well protected. Colds however are a whole other story, I cant seem to stop getting them back to back :( What a start to the new year!

The only reaction I still get to this day (from the flu shot) is my body weakening, almost making me feel like Im under the weather....which is normal b/c they are injecting you with that years strain of the flu so your body can build resistance to it in case it should try to invade your body.

Best advice, consult with your family doctor. Going by your body's history and chemistry they'll help you make a better educated decision. But they key is to get the shot BEFORE the flu season starts!

My hubby and i always take a flu shot. The new strain of flu that is in the Oklahoma city area was NOT included in the vaccine shot so we are still at rish for that strain. But as a child i had the flu so since taking the flu shots we haven't had the flu. Some colds. Since i began cardio/weight training i have not been sick and have taken nearly 50lbs off have 65lbs to go and have never felt better.
