Here is what I started with. When I first started I spent $25.00 per pay just on prepping because my pantry was already stocked. Had it not been for a full pantry and all the prepping I had done, when dh was without work for over a year, it would have been impossible to do what we did with the few $$ we had.

- grains
- rice
- beans
- peanut butter
- honey
- yeast
- canned fruit
- canned tomatoes (I use a lot of tomatoes in dishes)
- powdered milk

Thats just a start. From there I would store canned milk, canned veggies, canned meat. I would also make sure I had batteries, small propane cylinders, band-aids, those types of things on hand.

I had stored water but it went to salt crystals all around the pail, so now I will purchase bottled water instead. We have very hard water.

Here are a couple of links that help in the storing of foods:

Start with stuff you alread eat! It does not good to stockpile stuff you will never eat.

We started with:

peanut butter
tuna
canned soups
canned veggies/fruits
flour
sugar
shortening
