German Red Cabbage


Recipe Description
My Mom's tradition: whoever finds the bay leave on their plate cleans the kitchen!​
Preparation Steps:

Easy​
Time Needed:
Ingredients:
1 medium red cabbage shredded

1 small onion chopped

2 small or 1 large apple chopped – I prefer McIntosh apples

1/3 c sugar

1/3 white vinegar

1tbs butter

1tsp salt

2 bay leaves​
Serves:
Directions:
To a large pot add butter, melt, add onions and cook until tender

Add shredded cabbage and apples, cook for about 5 minutes

Add sugar, vinegar, salt and bay leaves

Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 40 minute​

I remember having this in a good German restaurant with saurbraten. My dh LOVED it, and I've been looking for some new side dishes to make, so this will go on my list. Thanks for it. I didn't realize how easy it is to make either.

btw, I love your mom's little tradition. Can I ask what nationality you are? From your recipes, it seems you're of European descent. Well so are we, (italian & polish), and so I just got curious.

I am from Germany, met my hubby 16 years ago while he was stationed in Germany. His Family are Irish and Lithuanian.

I too had this at a German restaurant, it was a side dish that came with almost every entree ordered. I fell in love and am happy to see you post your recipe here. :tay:
