I found out I was a Gestational Diabetic at about the same time as you--around 8 mos. This was (well lets see--the 'child' in question turns 22 next week) a long time ago, and they didn't do the tests routinely, like now, so it wasn't until my second pregnancy (that one 22 years ago) that the doc decided that this was my second BIG baby, (he kept saying I was 'big for dates') and maybe he should check.
And they found I was. This was the last time I planned to be PG, so I just had a month to 'take care of it'.
They put me on a 2000 cal diabetic diet, and I just did that for the remainder of the PG. It was a LOT of food, but better food, at least I was eating healthier, and not eating chips at night till my feet swelled.

ig: LOL!
I wouldn't get a glucometer right yet. See what he wants you to do. At this stage of the PG, you could just eat a diabetic 2000 cal diet--which for me was 3 healthy meals, more fruits and veggies, and 3 healthy snacks, so I was eating 6 smaller meals a day= 2000 cals. Till you find out what the doc wants you to do.
My kid was fine-- (in hopes of helping you relax)--he is a college senior this year, and never a health problem. I was probably diabetic with my first, too, the doctor said, and we just didn't know it. He has always been in good health too.
BUT, after the PG, you should be aware that this puts you at greater risk for someday being a type 2 diabetic, especially if (like me :shake

you are overweight as you age. Just letting you know. But I am 53, and over weight (pudgy not huge) and my sugars are normal so far.
Good luck and don't worry. Eat right! LOL!
