Would a home monitoring kit be overdoing it? It wasn't prescribed.

I haven't even taken my 3 hour glucose test yet, so I have no official diagnosis yet. I won't be taking that until a week from today.

I was pregnant 3 times and failed the 1 hour test 3 times. I passed the 3 hour test 3 times and was never diagnosed with Gestation Diabetes. So, yeah, I would wait if I were you. If you have a CVS, they have a free monitor this month. :)

Do you remember what your numbers are? I'm not certain, but I think I failed it pretty good. The thing is, I wont be able to get in to my 3 hour until next friday. I took my 1 hour a little late, I'm already 32 weeks and I'll be delivering in about 4-6 weeks. I just feel like I'm kind of getting down to the wire and I don't want to go on business as usual in case there is a problem, kwim?

Don't you have a doc? They would tell you asap...I thought this should be around 25 weeks... My test turned out perfect with my first two and the third was a little weird. I was borderline and took the 3 hour test and it came out fine. From the first test it was only maybe a week that I got back in for the second time...Doctors take this seriously..

I know you was not talking to me, but.....

Sorry, I don't remember my numbers. I think that if there was a serious issue, they would have insisted that you come in sooner for the 3 hour test. The lab would have alerted your doctor if there was a reason to worry.

I found out I was a Gestational Diabetic at about the same time as you--around 8 mos. This was (well lets see--the 'child' in question turns 22 next week) a long time ago, and they didn't do the tests routinely, like now, so it wasn't until my second pregnancy (that one 22 years ago) that the doc decided that this was my second BIG baby, (he kept saying I was 'big for dates') and maybe he should check.

And they found I was. This was the last time I planned to be PG, so I just had a month to 'take care of it'.

They put me on a 2000 cal diabetic diet, and I just did that for the remainder of the PG. It was a LOT of food, but better food, at least I was eating healthier, and not eating chips at night till my feet swelled. :pig: LOL!

I wouldn't get a glucometer right yet. See what he wants you to do. At this stage of the PG, you could just eat a diabetic 2000 cal diet--which for me was 3 healthy meals, more fruits and veggies, and 3 healthy snacks, so I was eating 6 smaller meals a day= 2000 cals. Till you find out what the doc wants you to do.

My kid was fine-- (in hopes of helping you relax)--he is a college senior this year, and never a health problem. I was probably diabetic with my first, too, the doctor said, and we just didn't know it. He has always been in good health too.

BUT, after the PG, you should be aware that this puts you at greater risk for someday being a type 2 diabetic, especially if (like me :shake:) you are overweight as you age. Just letting you know. But I am 53, and over weight (pudgy not huge) and my sugars are normal so far.

Good luck and don't worry. Eat right! LOL!

Did you have gestational diabetes with your other children? I would say call your doc on Tuesday and just talk about your fears and she what he/she has to say. If nothing else, they may be able to pull some strings and get you in for your 3 hour test earlier.

For this weekend, just relax, watch what you eat and have a great time!

28 weeks is when they normally do it. We were in the middle of a move and between doctors for quite a while and then I didn't suspect there would be any problem so I put it off for awhile. I took my 1 hour 2 days before my last appointment, so they told me pretty much as soon as they got the results. I think they told me to schedule the test asap, but I waited for two days and apparently this test is something that you have to schedule so they're booked for a few days.

Frugal Nurse, it does say something about monitoring under treatment. Not that it matters I guess.

My first two pregnancies were fine and this appears to be the only issue so far with this one. Anyway, thanks everyone for the advice.

With my second pregnancy my ob/gyn insisted I had to have gestational diabetes. She sent me three separate times for the 3hr blood glucose screening and one was high'ish but not enough to say I had it. With every visit she hounded me, making sure I ate no sweets and watched my diet carefully - and I did. She monitored my weight gain like a fiend, barely content that I gained a total of eight pounds. (Yes I was overweight to begin with) She sent me in to be induced a week early because my daughter was showing about 9 1/2 lbs with the ultrasound, my son was 9lbs10oz and it was a 'snug delivery'. She feared what would happen in that last week with all the growing they do in the end. She insisted on having a neonatal pediatrician in the delivery room, not the pediatrician I had requested.
In the end, I cannot thank her enough for everything she did. My daughter was delivered at 9lbs 4oz and had low blood sugar at birth but was vigorous. The pediatrician did not step away from her, within minutes she was quiet and limp and her blood sugar plummeted to the point where she was on the verge of seizures. He gave her glucose through her umbilical cord, through and IV and also a bottle at the same time to get her back, I nearly lost her. I never suspected there was a problem. I always felt fine, I watched what I ate and my blood glucose though sometimes not optimal, was within the normal range. Maybe if I had been tested more then many issues could have been avoided. We were lucky that everything turned out well.
If I had it to do all over again, I do believe I would go for more testing at home. I don't believe you can be too safe with that if you have reason to believe there could be an issue. It would be a small price to pay for a big piece of mind. Ensuring a healthy pregnancy is not worth cutting corners.
I wish you the best and I hope you have a happy and healthy pregnancy, and of course, a happy and healthy baby.

I was diagnosed at 24 or 25 weeks - I failed the 3 hour test by such a small margin that the specialist I was sent to said that most doctor's wouldn't have even bothered to diagnose it. I have no risk factors at all (normal weight, no family history) but ended up insulin dependent at 33 weeks. I had to do the testing 4 times a day plus pee strips in the morning. Neither I nor my son had any real major complications, though (thank goodness!)

Honestly, the meters are cheap enough and usually there are tons of deals that are free after rebate, that if I were you I might pick one up if it gives you that peace of mind. It's probably nothing, but sometimes doing little things like that just make you feel better.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I did end up getting a home test kit and as of yet it hasn't given me anything over 130. Most of my readings have been between 100-110, lowest being 80. I suspect that something I ate before my 1 hour might have affected the results.

Nishu, when are you checking your blood sugar. I had gestational diabetes with 2 out of 4 pregnancys. I had to check it first thing in the morning and then an hour after each meal. If I remember correctly, has been almost 4 years since I had my last child. The morning/fasting sugars were good if under 100, the postmeal sugars were to be under 130.

Usually, I'm checking about an hour after a meal. The 80 came up mid-morning though when I started to feel jittery.

I was fine for the first two, but the third was way off the charts...I was a false positive for GD.

this close to your delivery date i would just watch what you eat and drink.

Nishu, how is it going? Have you been able to get in to see a doc yet?

So when is your due date? :cloud9:
I'm swell, thanks. :)

My 3 hour is scheduled for tomorrow, but since my last appointment I haven't been in to see a doctor. I'm taking the two kids with me when I go for the test tomorrow. I wonder how that's going to go. :ponder:

I was diagnosed with GD at 34 weeks with my second child. The doc sent me to a program where they went over my diet and gave me a monitor and I checked in every week. My son was born with low blood sugar, and I still think he gets hypoglycemic, but other than that he's fine.

I knew before the results came back that I had it though, I just didn't feel right.

Good luck, I hope everything turns out okay!!

My 3 hour test came back a-ok! That's one less thing to worry about. I also got a date for c-section. On July 9th I'm going to have a baby! :tay:
