McDonald?s Announces a Healthier Happy Meal | Fitbie

"In addition to the apples, McDonald’s is planning a 15 percent reduction in sodium across its U.S. menu by 2015, and has vowed to cut added sugars, saturated fats and calories in domestic meals by 2020. It is also launching an app for mobile phones focused on nutrition information."

In the US. There are different changes happening in Canada. Adding yogurt to the Happy Meal and dropping the size of the fries (still offering choice of apples or fries).

Has anyone ever tried the apples from McD's? They just don't sound very appetizing to me, though I do like the concept of offering them as a choice.

I'm not impressed either.

When we go out it is to get stuff that I'm not cooking at home. I can slice apples. Even the kids can slice apples.

I don't like to stink up the house with oil smell so we go out upon occasion for a fry, not an apple. On top of that, they probably have to put some kind of preservative on it to keep it from changing colors which puts it right back into the unhealthy category with fries. Do I really want sodium benzoate hyping up my kid? (or the one sitting behind me in the booth??)

"McDonald's USA also promised Tuesday to reduce sugar, saturated fats and calories in its meals, through "varied portion sizes, reformulations and innovations," by 2020."

...by 2020? Really?
When I go to Mickey D's I know I'm buying an incredibly unhealthy, high fat, high sodium meal. I am not disillusioned about it. I just hope this change doesn't make some people think McD's is in any way a healthy choice. It is still fast food.

Yes, I like them already sliced ready to go in a nice little package.

It appears the caramel dipping sauce might be going away though at least in the happy meal.

The preservative they use on the apples is calcium ascorbate ( a blend of calcium and vitamin c to maintain color)

I think this is dumb. We don't eat at McDonald's anymore (my 9 year old actually refuses to now) but if I want to go out and have some junk, then by golly I want some junk. No one should eat at McDonald's so much that one order of fries is going to be a problem for their kids.

I think as often as we go...once every...six or eight months?? It should not be looked down upon me as a mother to be giving the kiddos a fat filled meal. Those people that do look down at me for it have no clue that my kids eat and can probably name more vegetables than they ever get. And they love it. So if once in a blue moon, we go out for a juicy cheeseburger, by gosh, I am going to get them the works.

If I want french fries then I want french fries. If I want an apple I'll eat it at home. I don't eat out to eat a stupid apple.

It's not McDonalds, it's the big brother groups out there raising a stink and controlling what you're eating. It's been all over the news for months... We're making our kids fat...??? Quite frankly, in my opinion, it's my business what my kids and my house eats and not these special interest groups.

Even Michelle Obama, the eat healthy queen, got busted pix and all eating at a fast food place, biggest hamburger they had AND fries...when caught she said, "Everything in moderation."

If I or my family want yogurt and apples I'll serve it at home. If I eat out it's something I don't want to or can't cook at home. No one elses business. No special interest groups nor big brother.

IMO they need to start with the schools and not the fast food places.

IMO people should just go home and make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Surely we still remember how to do that?

They've already covering the schools. All over nationwide news also. Several cities over the US. One can't have potatoes of any kind, not even mashed. Parents can't send a school lunch with a potato of any kind.
Another, pizza was taken off the menu. I can't even START to remember all the stuff taken away from school menus nor the stuff the parents, THE PARENTS, can't send in a packed lunch. That one gets me, the PARENTS, can't say no to the school lunch and pack what they want the kid to have. God forbid they have a candy bar.

But school lunches have been on the hit list for a long time...little by little...and parent's have no say.

Hmmm... not the reaction I thought would happen here. Personally, I don't see a problem with them offering fruit, as well as a smaller portion of fries. You can still get more fries for your kid, if you want to. What's the problem?

Cutting the sodium seems like a great idea, although I don't see why it should take 8 years to do so. Unless it takes that long for them to keep the same taste (heaven forbid a restaurant should change its taste) but use less sodium.

I 'm not saying it isn't good to reduce sodium etc etc. What I am getting at (and not very well, my thoughts are all over the place) is that I don't think it's up to food chains and such to tell me what a healthy meal is for my kiddos. I know. Ask my kids if they want brussels sprouts or eggplant for dinner. Honest, they want both. Ask them if they'd rather a snickers or a sliced papaya. They'll go for the papaya, no kidding. I am doing something right. But now and again the get an opportunity to have BK or McD's and have something there. I don't need the resturant telling me how to introduce fruits and veggies to them. They can have a regular fast food dinner and not have a problem with it. That;s all I was trying, poorly, to articulate.

Some of the children going into McDonalds can barely walk they are so heavy. They are grasping the parents hand and being led inside. The obesity is not McDonalds fault. It is their parents. McDonald is a fast food joint. They sell unhealthy foods.

I intensely dislike anyone telling parents how they MUST feed their children. It is absolutely no one's business except the parents. That said, I would appreciate the option of switching out certain parts of a meal with yogurt, fruit and salad for myself. I think all meals should have that "option", not just the kids meals. But mandated meal changes

As far as schools policing packed lunches and usurping parental authority :soapbox: I've got some choice words that have rushed to the forefront of my brain that I dare not say. If they want to change the purchased school lunches, then more power to them, but if I had a kid that I packed lunches for and I wanted to send them with ding dongs, a can a coke and a cheese curl sandwich, that's my dang business, not theirs. I'd never do that, but I believe every parent has a right to raise their child as they see fit. What makes the powers that be believe they have the right to usurp parental authority?
