Thank Goodness for WIC! We are foster parents and have had the blessing of WIC for our kids! Especially for milk with the prices now! :) However, we had an infant that did not like the hot infant cereal (barley, rice, etc). and we can't seem to keep up with using all of the cold cereal we are now getting with our two toddlers. does anyone have any recipes using single grain hot cereal or Cheerios, Chex, Corn Flakes, and Special K? I will not waste what we have but....sure would like some variety. Thanks

The only things that come to mind are to use the baby cereal by mixing into bread dough or other baked goods, or stirring into oatmeal for added nutrition. As for the cold cereals, you can make rice crispy treats, snack mixes (like chex mix - you can make with plain cheerios as well), or you could use the non-sweetened cereals as toppings for casseroles, or to add crunch to salads. Hope that helps some. :)

Maybe you could trade with someone on freecycle for something you could use. We've had several moms trade on our freecycle site. It worked out well for both parties.

I've seen a recipe like Rice Krispy treats made with Cheerios and peanut butter. Maybe you could check out cooks.com for a few more of those type recipes. Also there is a really good no bake cookie recipe made with peanut butter and coco puffs....yum. I'll bet you can find that one cooks.com or similar site. ;)

I was going to suggest rice krispy type treats. You can also use some in "trail" mixes for on the go snacks, home made "granola" bars.

I do wish we had a program like WIC in Canada. The prices of food are killing us. I have a decent size budget, but there are 6 of us, plus daycare kids to feed. So it's very basic eating.

My kids havent had a fruit snack, granola bar, fruit cup in a long time! Not even a treat. Lots of baking and improvising.

My kids love snack mixes made with cereal, peanuts, small cheese crackers, pretzels, etc.

How about donating the baby cereal to a battered woman's shelter if there is one in your area? Alot of the time those woman leave with nothing more than the clothes on their backs and shelters can always use things like that.

This is what I was going to suggest.

Do you have elementary aged children? Maybe their teacher could use them for snack time.

The hot cereal can be used in stews or graveys to thicken it up. (If your talking about the powdery baby stuff) It's so bland it generally takes on the flavor of whatever you put it in.

Some of the cold cereals like Kix or cheerios can be crushed and used like a graham cracker pie crust.

single grain hot cereal
use in bread/muffins/cookies

Cheerios, Chex, Corn Flakes, and Special K?
Since they aren't sugary, I have used them as breadcrumbs in meatloaf, meatballs, veggie casserole, to bread chicken etc... used as a breadcrumb substitute in general.

You can use the cheerios and chex to make treats as well, either 'krispies', chex mix, trail mix or puppy chow.
