OKay, this is going to sound so trivial, but my Frannie is getting spayed tomorrow and I have already had 2 panic attacks. By nature I am already a huge worry wart. I stress over everything and anything medical whether it is human or animal related. To make matters worse my cat, Jack almost died last year when he was nuetered. The vet did the pre-surgical blood work and Jack's blood is jet black. She made a note of it and decided she wanted to look into what would cause a cat's blood to be discolored so badly. She then proceeded to give him the anesthesia and as soon as she did he turned colors and quit breathing. To make a long story short they had to "bag" him and breath for him for over 3 hours. She was about to call him dead and he began to twitch a little. After a couple of more hours he was coming to. For the next few days it was like he was super drunk. He staggered around, fell over and bumped into everything. I had never been so worried or upset in all of my life. The vet said it was the first time she had ever seen anything like this happen. She was so concerned about my Jack, she cancelled all of her appointments and surgeries that day to work on Jack. Jack cannot ever have anesthesia again.
Because of all of this I am concerned about Frannie. I know hundreds of dogs get spayed everyday and are fine. But I am still a nervous wreck!! Dh is going to get up tomorrow and take her to the vet for me. He is not going to wake me so I can MAYBE sleep through it. Am afraid if I am awake time will go by so slowly and I might have some serious attacks.
I know you all must think I am a total nut case and this is so trivial - and I keep telling myself to just chill out, and I am being stupid. My mouth is saying it but my head is ignoring it!!

I don't think you're a nutcase at all. I do the same thing whenever I have to take any of my pets to the vet for any reason, even if only to get a rabies shot. I worry the same way as I do with my child.

Just keep remembering why you are getting the procedure done in the first place. So many animals die in shelters, and by getting your dog spayed you are doing your part to end the vicious cycle.

If you get nervous at all while your dog is at the vet, I would call them immediately. The receptionist should be able to tell you how your dog is doing, if the procedure is going as planned, or if there are any complications. Sometimes just hearing the voice of the receptionist reassuring you that everything is going fine can be a serious help.

I hope everything goes well for you and your Frannie tomorrow!

Awwww... {{HUGS}} I'm the same way. I had my DH take our oldest dog when he had his surgery 6 years ago. I ended up taking our other dog by myself last year and I cried as they were taking him away. I apologized for being such a baby and the vet handed me a tissue, told me everything was going to be just fine and he'd call me right after the surgery. He also said alot of people cry over this.... even grown men.... lol

Frannie is going to be just fine :)

You are no nut case, or stupid, The same thing happens here, it just shows that you really care.

My vet has no problems with people calling to check on their animals, I agree call if you want, just tell them you are just checking in, they will understand.

We stayed in the lobby for 3 hours when Tazzie had her twisted intestine surgery, I dont think they thought we were crazy,, we just love our animals.. and they know it.

I try to say busy cleaning & getting ready for the homecoming, make sure I can spend time with them ..instead of cleaning, cooking etc. when they come home.
I try to keep saying positive things to myself, sometimes it helps with the attacks, try having a nice cup of coffee or tea,, just trying to help,, everyone is different,, just feel for you, sometimes things can make a person feel so helpless,

let us know when everythings ok!!

Hope that everything goes well tomorrow!
I am the same way about my dogs. They mean the world to me. A couple of months ago I came home and my dogs paws were swollen so big she could not walk. I had to rush her to pet emergency clinic. They kept her overnight and I called them 3x in the middle of the night to check on her. I could not sleep. I started crying when we dropped her off too. My boyfriend thought I was a little nuts, but I am attached to the hip to that dog.

ditto! You should have seen me the day Emma got fixed. Sigh, just try your best to think of other things, like readying the house for your furbaby's needs when you bring Frannie home.

I'm glad Frannie's surgery went well and you can relax and focus on helping her to recover. I'm sorry Jack's surgery was so strange. I personally would be seriously questioning why the surgery went ahead when he had BLACK blood. I would want to know what caused that before doing surgery. I'd also want to know what sort of monitoring equipment they use during surgery. Some vets use none, others have machines that monitor heart rate, oxygen level, etc. Has Jack been checked for heart/lung problems (via xray and/or ultrasound)? Has he had any other labwork done?

So far, all of Jack's other check-ups have been fine. He has been tested for all kitty related illnesses and had all vaccinations. He has not had any extensive testing done on his blood. The vet has since moved away and I never was able to find out if she fiigured out why he has black blood. His vet now (DH use to work for him in HS, and he is awesome) says Jack is normal and healthy, with the exception of the color of his blood and not being able to have anesthesia. He plays hard in the house, jumps and runs and pounces like any other psycho kitty. I do not take any chances with Jack though. He stays inside 24/7 - do not want to take a chance on him getting hurt and needing anesthesia. When we go out of town he only stays at my vet's place since they are aware of his blood issue. I try not to get him too stressed or upset. He is treated like a baby for the most part.
