Keeping bar soap in your clothing drawers will scent your clothes better than a fabric softener.

I read a long time ago that as soap ages it hardens and will last longer in the tub and shower. This is true.

I like Irish Spring bar soaps and leave them in their boxes and wrappers in the clothing drawers, but any type will work.

When we need a new bar of soap in the bathroom, I just take an old one out of the drawer and replace it later.

I also put bars of soap in unused suitcases to keep them smelling nice.

My mom always had us do that when we were kids. Forgot all about that until I saw your post!

I don't get the scented fabric softener thing. Why do you want your clothes smell to clash with whatever scent YOU are wearing? Or does it take the place of perfume?

I don't understand scents in public at all. There are a lot of people like me who physically react negatively to perfumes in any form. Smoking in public is banned because of health reasons. Perfumes should be, too.
