I work in human resources. It gives me information that many employees don't have - such as who is on the short list for lay offs and which departments will be loosing manning. How would you deal with the fact that you know folks who are doing things (refinancing homes, buying new cars, etc.) that you know they might not if they knew their jobs might not be there in a few months?

What a perfectly awful situation to be in, I hope that I am never in a position like that. My dh was often in situations like that when the boss knew he was going to fire someone, my dh knew and was not able to say anything. I guess as bad as it sounds, you cant jeoporadize your own job by saying something you are not allowed to say. Is there a rule that says that you cannot tell the people affected by these changes?

My heart goes out to you.

Wow, that is a tough one. We have always based our big decisions on one income. We've done that for 18 years as I'm a sahm. It really bothers me to see some families overextending themselves to have things they want vs. things they need.

I don't think I would be very good in the descrete part of Human resources in this instance.
If the only breadwinner in the family may lose his /her job I would have a major time keeping my mouth shut.
I would also waver if it was someone close to me. I try to make it a fun thing with people who are close to me that saving money and planning for what if is not only a necessity but can be fun too. Planning for what if really can save your butt.

Tough position to be in.

When dh worked for a small cheese plant, his boss new the plant was closing and could not tell anyone, he was sworn to secrecy. When we went to purchase our new van - he could not tell the bank that the plant was closing. Two weeks after purchasing our van at $42,000.00 - the plant closed!!!

Unless there is a policy where your allowed to tell the employees, I would say you can't say anything unless you were willing to give up your job. I sure wouldn't want to be in your position.

I agree with everyone here...It makes one realize we should be planning better for the what if's and hope they never happen....I would also want to tell them so that they could prepare.....

Gosh it's a terrible position to be in, but if I were you I would keep my mouth shut and pretend not to know anything. That way you stay in good standing with your boss and your friends/co-workers don't know that you know. JMHO
