If you want to protect your skin without paying for overpriced commercial sunscreen products, try making your own at home with these simple recipes!

1. Homemade Sunscreen

This homemade sunscreen is made with natural ingredients and no added chemicals or synthetic substances. Because it is made with natural ingredients and is gentle on sensitive skin, it is a good option for children and for people who burn easily.

Ingredients:
  • ¼ cup coconut oil
  • ¼ cup beeswax granules
  • 2 tablespoons organic shea butter
  • ½ cup sweet almond oil
  • 2 tablespoons zinc oxide powder
  • 1 teaspoon carrot seed oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 to 5 drops lavender essential oil
Instructions:
  1. Combine the coconut oil, beeswax, and shea butter in a double boiler over medium-low heat.
  2. When the ingredients are melted, stir smooth and remove from heat.
  3. Stir in the almond oil, zinc oxide, carrot seed oil, vanilla, and essential oils.
  4. When well combined, transfer to a glass jar and cool to room temperature.
  5. Cover with the lid and store at room temperature.
  6. Apply a small amount before sun exposure and reapply after swimming or sweating.

2. Aloe Vera After-Sun Spray

This after-sun spray is a must-have if you spend a lot of time outdoors. After a long day in the sun, rehydrate and soothe your skin with aloe vera and essential oils.

Ingredients:
  • ½ cup witch hazel hydrosol
  • 2 tablespoons pure aloe vera gel
  • 12 drops lavender essential oil
  • 8 drops peppermint essential oil
Instructions:
  1. Combine the ingredients in a plastic spray bottle.
  2. Shake until well combined then let rest for at least 24 hours.
  3. Shake well before application, spritzing a light layer over your skin.
  4. Allow the spray to air-dry and reapply as needed.

3. Soothing After-Sun Lotion

Whether you forgot to put on sunscreen or just didn't reapply it often enough, this after-sun lotion will soothe your sunburned skin while keeping it hydrated. This lotion is made with natural moisturizers like cocoa butter and coconut oil with the anti-inflammatory and cooling benefits of aloe vera.

Ingredients:
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon organic cocoa butter
  • 3 tablespoons pure aloe vera gel
  • 1 tablespoon organic olive oil
  • 8 drops lavender essential oil
  • 6 drops peppermint essential oil
Instructions:
  1. Combine the coconut oil and cocoa butter in a small glass jar.
  2. Place the jar in a saucepan of simmering water and heat until the ingredients are softened.
  3. Remove from the saucepan then stir in the remaining ingredients.
  4. Set aside to cool to room temperature then cover and let rest for 24 hours.
  5. Apply a small amount to sunburned skin, gently rubbing it in.

4. Homemade Sunscreen Lip Balm

When you spend a day in the sun, you probably put on sunscreen to protect your skin - but what about your lips? The skin on your lips is sensitive and can burn as well, so protect it with this lip balm.

Ingredients:
  • 2 tablespoons beeswax granules
  • 1 ½ teaspoons carnauba wax
  • 1 teaspoon organic shea butter
  • 2 tablespoons organic olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
  • 1 tablespoon wheat germ oil
  • 8 drops vanilla essential oil
  • 8 drops sweet orange essential oil
  • 6 drops carrot seed essential oil
Instructions:
  1. Combine the beeswax, carnauba wax, and shea butter in a double boiler over low heat.
  2. Heat until melted then remove from heat and stir in the remaining ingredients.
  3. Stir in until well combined then cool slightly.
  4. Pour the mixture into empty lip balm tubes and cool completely.
  5. Apply a layer of lip balm before sun exposure and reapply as needed.
