My son's 5th Birthday Party is tomorrow and he wanted a Mario theme which was not cheap if I purchased everything from online. I decided to make the things myself and save a ton of money. One of the things I made was his cake which cost me a grand total of $10. Anybody who is familiar with Mario Brothers recognizes the Invincibility Star and here it is made out of 40 or so cupcakes...

Absolutely stunning!! How long did it take you to decorate and what's under the star? What a fun theme!!

That is really wonderful, shortstack!

My sons were really into Mario bros, too. Those little guys have been popular for a loooooong time, haven't they?

That is so awesome! I think you may have just given me an idea for DS7's birthday in September. He's crazy about SMB and this would be fantastic to do for him. :)

Thanks :)
It only took me about an hour, not including the baking of the cupcakes. The thing that took the longest was figuring out how to place the cupcakes so they looked like a star.
Under them is Elmer's Black Foamboard. It's very handy stuff to have around. That piece was leftover from doing paint swatch mosaics with my kids.

If anybody decides to do this theme here is an idea for your invitations. I made these on the computer and printed them out on cardstock I already had. I obviously blacked out all the private info ...
Optional: Handout little packs of crayons (the party favor kind that you can get for 10-20 cents a pack) so the kids can color them.

That's so cool! I wonder if you could overfill some cupcakes so that they have a big top and decorate them with fondant dots to make toadstools? From the title of the thread that's kind of what I thought you had done.
