Boy, is this out of the blue or what? Where did this choice come from? I never heard her name mentioned at all among the choices.

Don't know very much about her.

I know who she is and have been reading some things about her lately, but I have to admit I was a bit shocked when I saw she was the VP pick

However, I think its BRILLIANT!!!! I'm so excited ~ I'm even MORE of a McCain supporter now! :)

I was disappointed when I heard he'd picked someone fairly unknown. I was hoping he'd pick Romney. After reading her bio, I've changed my mind. She sounds amazing!

Brilliant move by McCains camp. She sounds like a nightmare to me, but I know she represents exactly what so many McCain followers were looking for. Politically, an excellent choice for McCain. Whoever came up with her as a running mate needs a raise! The race just got tighter again.

Man, this is one heck of an election!!!

Amy, I'm just curious what about her sounds like a nightmare? (not trying to start a debate, I don't have time for one!) :D Just honestly curious. I would love to get some insight into how the "other side" views her.

I think if these two win (and even if they don't) she is really good for the Republican Party, as she will shake up party base and hopefully get us back on the right track ~ I'm not at all pleased with where the party has been going in recent years.

Just my gut reaction, but I'm always pulling for a mom of 'more than average'. I'll have to research her further. She'd have to be horrible for me to dislike her more than Biden though.

Jessica,

No debate here :hugz: Here's why I say that:

She's a woman, yet she doesn't support a woman's right to choose. That makes me crazy. People are always saying "Ooh, too much government, don't tell me how to live my life or what to do," yet they support making abortion illegal??? That just doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever. That is ALL about the government governing your very body, your very being. JMO

Also, (and we've had this discussion), she's a lifetime member of the NRA. I think we've documented my feelings on guns. :)

And, she's supportive of NCLB as it stands today. :yikes: Anyone who can look at that (a mother of 5, no less) and say that it is a good law as it is being put into practice today, has more than a few issues in my book.

However, I agree with you 100%...she is what the Republican party needs. She is their quintessential woman, and I absolutely understand that Republicans are going to love her. Again, I may not agree with her politics, but wow...what a strategy!!!

again ~ not trying to debate, but wanted to add one thought on abortion and a "woman's right to chose" Its not about governing a woman's body, its about giving a voice to a child that can't speak.

Everyone says that its all about a woman's right to chose what she does with her own body.....anyone who has ever been pregnant can tell you that the minute that baby is conceived your body no longer belongs to you. But I know that's a whole long debate about when life actually starts and its not something that anyone will change their mind about in my lifetime.

Anyhoo ~ I'm against abortion, but mostly because it completely leaves the father out of the picture. If a woman choses to give a baby up for adoption they will search high and low to get that father's signature. They will delay the process, make sure he is willing to give up parental rights, etc....

Why doesn't the father get the same consideration when it comes to abortion? I could get a little further behind the "prochoice" movement (although I still think its morally wrong) if the father were required to sign off on it before the procedure was completed.

I am sitting here watching the McCain speech. He is here in my Hometown and it's amazing!
The tickets were free. I'm at home, but was just over there, and man the crowd outside is just as pumped up as the people inside!

I am soo excited about this!!
I was scared he was going to choose someone a little too left for my taste. Considering I didn't like McCain much, but he was my best choice, this makes me WANT to vote for him. She's awesome!

She is exactly what the Republicans need and WANT! Good for her and now I can happily vote the McCain ticket.

I will also agree with Jessica regarding abortion. It isn't about the woman's body. It is about the unborn child inside her body. The life that starts growing at conception.

I think this is the smartest thing McCain has done so far in his campaign. That said, while I think she is an amazing woman (just read the wikipedia bio), I wouldn't vote for her or any ticket she was on for the following:

From wikipedia

Palin is strongly opposed to abortion and supports capital punishment.[30] While running for Governor of Alaska, Palin supported the teaching of creationism alongside evolution in schools,[31] however, she noted she would not use "religion as a litmus test, or anybody's personal opinion on evolution or creationism" as criteria for selection to the school board.[31]

She opposes same-sex marriage,

I can't ever understand how someone can strongly oppose abortion, but supports capital punishment. Especially with all the changes we have seen in rulings based on DNA evidence.

Teaching creationism in schools NEXT to evolution.....GRRRRRRRRRR. No thank you. You can see the other thread for reasons on that.

And she opposes same sex marriage, BUT because she has one gay friend (also mentioned in the article) she supported equal rights. To me...equality would be allowing marriage to same sex couples.

So, while I agree with her in getting the filth out of politics and cleaning up government, I don't like her stances on social issues. I would probably love to meet her in person and have long discussions. She seems very interesting, I just don't want her in charge of making decisions that would effect my families lives.

JMO though.

I am also against abortion and for capital punishment. I think the best way to explain it to you is the same argument some pro abortion people use: If everyone conceived sins, and we already have too many people, thats just bad business. I would much rather get rid of the bad guys than the babies. I can't honestly understand how someone can be for killing innocent unborn children and against killing guilty convicts.
I am also for gay rights and against gay marriage.. The best way to explain this? They still deserve to have rights. But, marriage was created to join MAN AND WOMAN in God's eyes. How can you join someone is God's eyes, when God does not like homosexuality?
And, everyone of my friends from childhood and high school are gay or lesbian.. every single one, isn't that strange? They all know how I stand on this, and don't really mind, given that I think we should make it easier to change their names legally, be attached to each other financially, and live together, and if they are good people and can pass the background check, I say let them adopt. When they can marry in God's eyes, my marriage will mean nothing.
I also agree with teaching creationism along side evolution, and not each separately. This allows for every group of people to get taught EQUALLY all the theories. Only teaching evolution cheeses off christians, only teaching creationism cheeses off anyone else. It's the best policy IMO.
I think this is great, because though I am republican, I just couldn't see myself agreeing with him 100% on everything.. this is definitely going to help. I share the beliefs that she does. Already this morning, some people have started in on her about not aborting her some with DS, and saying she should have and she can't run for VP because of that. How Stupid?! That makes me like her more!

Oh yeah...and her not supporting gay marraige. That upsets me as well.

asimplegirl...please watch your wording. Someone who is not "pro-life" is not necessarily "pro-abortion" or "anti-life." I am "pro-choice." There is HUGE difference. Having an abortion is something that I can never conceive of for myself, however, I don't believe that it is something that can be legislated. Illegal will make it illegal in ALL instances, and the fact is, there are some instances where it can be called for...where the mothers life is in danger, where the woman was raped, perhaps by a member of her own family. God forbid anyone ever be put in that position and be told "Sorry...nothing we can do about it...it's illegal."

Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that words are powerful. Saying "Pro-abortion" is a way of slanting the way of looking at people who are not "Pro-life." I'm all about life...I'm "Pro-life." But, I'm also about a woman's right to choose.
