I canned pears all day yesterday. I canned them just like
I did last year. My daughter came by tonight and I gave
her a jar to take to my Grandson. After they left, I opened
a jar for myself. The pears were delicious, but shortly
after eating some, I developed a burning of my throat,
tongue and lips. Not painful, but very noticeable. I called
her and told her to not give him the pears. I ate pieces
of pear all day yesterday that I was preparing for processing,
and that didn't happen.

I used a sugar solution of 2 cups sugar to 6 cups water in
which I boiled them for 5 minutes before transferring to
the jars. I used a new bag of sugar.

I am heartbroken over this as both myself and my Grandson
look forward to the pears all year. I planned to make a pear
pie for Thanksgiving for him.

I did Google this, but only allergies were brought up and that
was usually accompanied by itching which didn't happen. If
I had a allergy, it should have presented itself yesterday when
I snacked all day while working.

Does anyone have ANY idea at all what could have caused
this?

But did you have anything else with them?

And......if an allergy.....it could have come on...and be just something you reacted to.....

Don't know......but good luck figuring it out. You didn't say anything about a water bath for the pears........

I would try them again just to make sure it was the pears. Maybe have someone else try them, a little at a time, it might be unrelated.

I processed them in a water bath canner for 25 minutes.

However, I am happy to report that my family tried the
pears today and there wasn't a problem at all!

So, I may have developed some sort of allergy. I am
going to try some again though. I told my BF that I
REFUSE to be allergic to my pears. lol

As I have never had any type of allergy, that didn't
even enter my mind. I just assumed it was something
wrong with the pears.

I am glad that they were okay for everyone else and I hope that when you try them again, you don't have the same problem. Congrats on finishing them and being successful!

I didn't have ANY allergies until about 10 years ago and they get worse each year. My first 'round' with the allergies, I thought I had a cold! Now Claritin and benadryl are my best buddies in the spring and fall......when they are at their worst!
