From my grocery receipt last Friday

10 pound Russett potatoes 1.49 or about 15 cents a pound

Tater tots 1.79 ( two pounds) or about 90 cents a pound

If only I could figure out how to make my own tater tots.

Here are some more homemade tater tot recipes. Not sure , but you might like one better then the others. They are more or less made as balls since the official Tater Tot is actually extruded with a machine. One recipe does form it in a cigar shape and then cut. Maybe that would make it more TT looking.

Tater Tots were first created in 1953 when Ore-Ida founders F. Nephi Grigg and Golden Grigg were trying to figure out what to do with left over slivers of cut up potatoes. They came up with the novel idea of chopping up the potato slivers, adding flour and seasoning, then pushing the mash through holes and slicing off pieces of what came out on the other side.
