All of you who stockpile, I have a question for you. I noticed when I first started stockpiling, I would use indiscriminately what I had, thinking "What the heck, I have 6, 10, whatever more of the item". So, my whole point of being frugal and never paying full price was kinda being zeroed out.

I am trying to get better at this. I did narrow it down to the fact that I tended to do this mostly with shampoo and body washes. So now, I am being a lot more vigilant when I shower.

Does anyone else do this? And if so, what are your pitfalls- HBA, food, laundry soap??????

I think we all do this to a point and my kids were the worst, well why not we have 10 cases of toilet paper so why cant i use a roll at a time. I think after awhile the newness of always having items stocked up wore off and things just leveled out. I have had a stockpile for over 10 years so to us its nothing new.

Actually, no. I don't think I have ever thought this way. For example, I will wash out the last little bit of shampoo, conditioner, laundry detergent, whatever so that I can get every little bit out of it, even though I know that I may have 10 plus in my stockpile.....basically I'm just cheap!!! :) :)

Oh, I am quite cheap too, just I guess it was a discipline issue. I can be quite impulsive, so maybe that's a big part of it. I am doing so much better with it. And it's weird that I never did this with any of our food stockpile. We still always saved leftovers and used it all up.

No, I find the opposite true for me personally. I like to see 20 shampoos, 15 toothpastes and 10 jars of peanut butter on my shelves. I almost hate to use the stuff in my stockpiles thinking that I won't find another great deal to replace it. Now as to my dh and my kids...they sometimes have an issue with it. My daughter thinks it is okay to sample one of everything or open 6 different kinds of shampoo at once. My son does the same with stockpiled cereal. They are getting better about it, but only because I insist they finish something up before opening something new. There are still some things that I keep back in hiding places (snacks, gum and candy especially) because if they knew there 12 bags of Chex Mix, they would eat twice as much just because it was there.

I totally agree. I looooovvvvve to admire my stockpile & it makes me a little sad to use it. Anxious, almost.

It's so funny to see the different points of view!

From - YAH! lookie what I have! to... OMG Look at that pile! I HATE to use it!

I read somewhere - Here maybe? that if you put a date on it.. .you can challenge yourself to make it last longer and longer. (shampoo, etc)

I'm pretty cheap too but I found that instead of sticking to my stockpile and normal use stashes, I'm intermixing them. I'll vary what I'm making one week as opposed to the next. For example, if I make hot dogs and mac n cheese one night, the next night I might use some of my tomato soup out of the stockpile and make hot dogs + tomato soup. I hate using what is in there but realize that I need to when the deals aren't so great one week to the next.

It's when my kids decide they want to overuse the stuff that I bought that irks me. It's when DS9 likes to go through an entire tube of toothpaste in a week when he can stretch it to at least two or three weeks. He's very OCD about brushing his teeth. I'm working really hard with getting the kids to realize that they're burning through things faster than they should be.

My DH seems to think that when I walk through the door with something that it is free game for him to eat. I find that I have to write on the item..... do not eat... it is for ... what ever ( trip, dessert for grandma's house etc) otherwise he will eat it when it walks in the door.

Just starting to get a stockpile that will last a while. I tend to forget about what is in the stockpile which is good in a way since it is a nice surprise. Am just getting used to using it. For some unknown reason I don't use it that often.

My husband is like that too, he'll open another container of milk before finishing the first. I'm lucky though, everything else I buy is the same so there's no WOW factor involved in opening 2 of the same thing.

The purpose of my stockpile is different then what you describe. My stockpile is to have food and supplies in reserve for emergencies.

My dh was laid off 9 times in the first 3 years of our marriage. (a month or more each, usually ) Two more times he was laid off, once for 9 months and once for 13 months.

I kept at least a months worth of food at all times. If a layoff came, we could use all the money for bills and use the food in reserve for eating. Even during the layoffs, I continued to stockpile, using what I had and putting back another month's worth.

I don't worry about picking up stuff "cheap". I worry about having at least 2-3 months worth of food on hand right now.

I cannot WAIT to have a huge stockpile. I have way too much free space and it needs to be used ;)
Hoping to admire it and yell at anyone who touches it.

I too have just started my stockpile. My partner laughs at me, because we have sooo much TP at home, and when we go shopping if it is cheap I will get some more, When we do go shopping and there isn't any that is really cheap I point out the prices to him so that he can see how much we are saving when I do get it heavily reduced.

Lately he hasn't been laughing quite so hard!

We have 2 double door pantries and then a walk in cupboard under the stairs (more like a little room - the kids call it the harry potter room the DH calls it the shop!) I am constantly telling the kids to get out of there they like to play in there, my husband tells them wanna come to the shop with me and he takes there hands and walks into the cupboard hahah he thinks he is hilariuos, he will say to dd get your mama some flour from the store, then he will yell out "what aisle love?? a real comedian!

I think I have your kids living at my house!
Seriously though, my 13 dd. loves to rotate through all the 'poos & conditioners, 'cause they all smell sooo good, I can't decide?

My 15 ds. does the same thing with the cereal and heaven forbid if we have any pop tarts in the stockpile!

As for running through the HBA stockpile? I have to say I'm pretty good about making them last as long as possible.
I remember back in Feb. I found an excellent deal of those HUGE warehouse sized laundry detergents, at my local Discount Grocery.
So, I bought 8 of them.
I'm just now finishing up with my first one, so by my estimations, what I have on hand should last me for the next 3.5 years, or maybe a bit longer 'cause I'm gonna start experimenting with adding part vinegar to my load along with the detergent.
