Target is coming to Canada and opening stores in 2013. They're buying out leases from Zellers, the Canadian retail chain.

Target coming to Canada - Canada - Canoe.ca

I don't think it will be the same as the US locations re: bargains and merchandise offered.

For example coupons are widely accepted down in the US and barely used/offered in Canada. Clothing brands/selection/sizing will still be different. A size 10 up in Canada is smaller then a size 10 down in the US.

So fellow Fugal Canadians...does this make you excited?

No. I have never found anything to buy in Target when in the States so I unless there is a big change in merchandise, I won't find anything when they come here :)

Fixed that for you ;)

Zellers, Target, I don't care what they call themselves. The stores are all messy, in seedy locations and never have any advertised items in stock. They can slap any logo they want on the door, I'm still not shopping there.
Hahaha - thanks MW. :)

A lot of the Zellers stores are old dumpy/shady looking but the one close to me actually got a makeover a few years ago and looked like a Target for the most part of the store. I said that when they had a grand re-opening. Isn't that kind of ironic? I guess the bigger ones in thriving neighbourhoods got the 'Target-ish' makeovers. I think there was (is?) a jumbo one in Square One Mall in Mississauga, ON - the times I've been there, they've had all the advertised items and of course its nice and bright and clean. Go figure.

I just had to laugh - we have two types of Target's down here - Tar-jay's (pronounced all french and fancy) and Targhetto's.

Personally, I love Target. Part of that is because I refuse to shop at Walmart.

I looooooooooove Target! This makes me a happy woman! When I lived in NC, I shopped Target all of the time. I hate Wal-Mart and I can't wait for Target to get here.

Lucky, ya'll, then! :) I also refuse to shop at Wal-Mart so Target is my mega retail outlet of choice. I really love their stores here in Texas, so clean, comfortable, and pleasant to shop at. I take advantage of their 5% off "red card" DEBIT card and online Target coupons and I save quite a bit of money each week. Enjoy your new store!

Target is awesome. It is so clean and quiet. No one yelling over a speaker system. They have coupons on their website to print out and they stack them too.

Also I recycle # 1 plastic at my local Target. It's the only place around that does.

We aren't getting a Target! :( We have Zeller's stores, but from what I've heard, none are being converted to Target! I guess we're too small a city for it? Too bad.

You know, that's the one mistake American firms seem to make when they come to Canada. They go by the size of the community when deciding what size store to put there. What they really need to do is go by the size of the service area, which is much larger. There is no major center within 3 hours of us. A Target store would have plenty of customers!

The Zeller's across the street here is one of the one's that has been slated to become a target, and we're so psyched in the neighbourhood.

However the people who still work in the store are just miserable and sad and slow. I always liked Zeller's stuff - especially the men's clothes, but now its just so bleak there. I'll be glad when the changeover happens.

I know - I'm excited too! Recently, DH and I went to a US Target just so we could compare (as well as pick up a few things). I do know the Zellers that are transitioning in the first round are going to start liquidating in May before they close in June/July. Imagine the sales/bargains to be found!
