bought 2 large (serving size) sterling spoons at a thrift store for TEN CENTS each!! Naturally they were tarnished and looked like heck but for $.10 I took a chance. They cleaned up really nice, I believe one is pre-1850. Weight is about 2 ounces each and silver is about $17 an ounce....

congrats that such a find. Will you keep them or make a little $$. My Dmom dumped so much stuff w/o me knowing. English China,1/2 her blue deco china set,several silver spoons. So thats what happens I guess.

I love polishing old silver too. It's just so pretty once it's shiny. Silverplate is so affordable and pretty. I "inherited" some things from hubby's mom and have been finding things at my parents that mom is willing to part with. Last weekend I found a pretty silverplate snowflake trivet. It's mine now!

I feel the same way about refurbishing rusty cast iron. It's so easy and when it's done, it looks and cooks fantastic. I have an orange griddle marinating right now, in fact.
