I saw a little about this on tv last night. Mel, my SO, looked at me and said that we should consider getting our own cow and raising it and did I think that dd would eat it. I really do hate it for the poor farmers in Canada and I expect that it will make its way to the US eventually. Looks like now is a good time to be a vegetarian!

What terrible news. I heard something about this yesterday and they sounded then as though they had a handle on it. I hope it doesn't spread and that the embargo is lifted asap.

Just now on the radio, they are saying absolutely no cows are being sold here in Manitoba and in the west either and the reporter said probably none being sold in Canada at all.

This can also affect sheep and goats (which I didn't know).

They are also talking about the physological affects on consumers and what they hear, believe and how it affects their shopping habits.

I'm glad I've gone vegetarian!!!

Terrible, terrible news. It will affect so many people and businesses in ways that we don't realize. Stores, trucking companies, like you mentioned the way people view things differently now, and so, so many more.............:(

:( I thought I was hearing things when I saw this on the news last night. We just got through SARS, we have West Nile Virus, we had people boycotting Canadian products due to Iraq.....what else can happen?

I haven't had an opportunity to talk to my neighbors yet, nor 2 of our friends. THey all have cattle and other adorable animals...lots of horses around us as well.

Our dollar was doing so well, I wonder what impact that will have on it.

To be truly selfish, we were considering locking into a really great low rate for a mortgage...but now...with all this horrible stuff....perhaps we should ride out an open mortgage. I would much rather see the economy be strong....but, when things like this happen, the repercussions can be so widespread and scary!

I feel so sad for the farmers and all the poor animals that will have to be put down!:(

Awwwwwwww.... sometimes I just wish I didn't need to watch the news!

This is so sad! I pray that it is an isolated case and that it does not spread. Praying for all of you in Canada and that this does not do a number on your economy. :hugz:

...I know...I just heard of it yesterday, two minutes on the news...(with kids I don't get to watch the news much)

This is terrible news. Do you know for how long they are forbidding the farmers to sell their cows, CJ? ...And you're so right on this, CJ:

They are also talking about the physological affects on consumers and what they hear, believe and how it affects their shopping habits.

I hope they find a solution to stop this and quick!

Thanks everyone for your encourements for us, Canadians. :heartsm:

Lucie, there are no cattle auctions going on until this is settled. More farms have now been quarantined and dh had heard (although this isn't confirmed yet) that there were now going to be farms in Manitoba quarantined also.

This is really going to hit the economy for sure, but for little towns like ours that rely so heavily on the farmers, its going to be devastating. Most of the few remaining stores left in our town were not doing well because of the last few years of drought, this is really going to hit them hard.

This is terrible, CJ! :( I can't even imagine how these farmers can feel now. They must be so worried of their futur. Farming can be unpredictable and tough. I really hope it will be controlled and stopped quick or else the farmers will have it hard for sure...

:reindeer: Thank you to all our friends in the South for thinking of us!

The mortgage rates have been reduced again....since the news of the Mad Cow disease appeared. Now, Toronto may have more problems with SARS.

I know the farmers around here have really been struggling, and this has only added to their burden.

If you can, please support your local farmers. Often times, if you compare their prices are comparable or quite competitive to the grocery stores.

Oh, and you cannot beat the taste that comes from the quailty and freshness of their goods.

:reindeer: I think it would mean so much to them, if people supported them, and let them know!
