Every family decorates the tree in a different way. Some families have a color scheme with carefully placed ornaments while for others it's a little more willy-nilly. No matter how you choose to decorate your holiday tree this year, try some of these fun DIY ornaments to shake things up!

1. Gingerbread Cookie Ornaments

When you're baking your favorite holiday treats, why not make an extra batch of gingerbread and turn them into fun and festive holiday ornaments! Find your favorite recipe and bake the cookies nice and crisp then decorate them with royal icing to make sure it hardens. Before the cookies cool, poke a hole through the top so you can thread a string through to hang them.

2. Jingle Bells

Head to the craft store to pick up a bag of jingle bells and some glittery pipe cleaners. String the bells on the pipe cleaners then gather them in bundles of three of four and loop the pipe cleaners so you can hang them. If you want a little more festivity, hot glue a holiday ribbon to the bundle or decorate the bells with colored paint or glitter.

3. Confetti Ornaments

If you're looking for an easy DIY ornament that will make your tree glitter, try these confetti ornaments. Grab a box of plain Christmas ornaments from your local craft store or repurpose some ornaments you haven't used in a few years. Fill a bowl with glitter and paint each ornament with a layer of craft glue. Dip the ornaments in glitter until they're fully coated then hang them up and watch them shine!

4. Mini Trees

Skip the trip to the craft store and head outside to gather up some twigs for this DIY ornament idea. Start with a popsicle stick as the trunk of your tree then cut the twigs into different lengths. Stack the twigs on the popsicle stick trunk with the widest at the base, coming to a point at the top then glue them down with hot glue. If you want, you can decorate your mini trees with metallic stars, glitter, or paint. Be creative!

5. Peppermint Ornaments

Even if you don't like to eat peppermints, they can still come in handy for this DIY ornament idea. Start by preheating your oven to 350°F and grease some holiday-themed metal cookie cutters with cooking spray. Place the cookie cutters on a parchment-lined baking sheet and fill them halfway with crushed peppermint candies - you can also keep them whole or break them into larger pieces. Bake for 5 to 6 minutes until the candies have melted then let them cool for a minute before poking a hole to hang them. Let them cool then hang them up!

When it comes to DIY holiday ornaments, the possibilities are limitless. If you don't like any of these ideas, buy a box or two of plain Christmas ornaments and gather up all the miscellaneous craft supplies you can find then let your kids go wild!
