In Germany you don't get anything for free anymore and only very little, which is really worthwhile reduced. Food has become much more expensive. Dairy products now cost three times as much.
There is basic security from the state, but many people with low incomes don't know how to pay for gas and electricity. It's going to be a cold winter.

That is so sad. Not any better here in the states.

I think we do have basic security in the form of SNAP, WIC, and other programs. They're probably not keeping pace with all the corporate greed that's ramping up inflation though. 🤬 I think things may be leveling off now, and some prices even seem to be falling a little.

I got 2 free Jack Links Beef Steak strips (sort of like jerky) today. Tasty!

I agree that the freebies are few and far between these days, just like coupons, and usually have a hidden cost.

For example today I got a free 16oz tub of cottage cheese and one of sour cream, both with store points that I had to spend ~$400 to earn.

I got a "free" holiday recipe booklet at the organic store, but their prices are 10-25% higher than anywhere else, so in a way, I paid for it.
