My husband and I currently live in Oklahoma and have to drive a good 2 hours to find decent kayaking/hiking spots. I have been doing a lot of research online and it looks like the Rockies are an outdoor enthusiasts dream.

Is Colorado as good as it sounds?

We lived on the outskirts of Denver many moons ago. I adore Colorado! It is a wonderful place to be if you want to experience the great outdoors. We camped, biked, hiked, skied, canoed, went white water rafting, etc... The Rocky Mountains are breathtaking. I don't know what the cost of living is like now, but it was reasonable when we lived there.

Yes. We live south of Colorado Springs. We love being at the edge of where the desert meets the mountains and we have the best of it all. Some snow but not enough to make us suffer yet we have access to all the snow we want. It maybe 10 right now but it will be mid-upper 50's today - in January. I don't think we've hiked the same place twice in two years - and we still have lists and piles of things to do.

PLUS...in our area the economy is pretty good... jobs are not too scarce and for a 2,000 sqft brand new built home on 2 acres we paid 140k and taxes are 1100/year.

I've lived here about 11 yrs and love it. Don't be afraid of snow. Bring a snow-friendly vehicle. Don't think spring has arrived unless its...end of May? June? *grin* Don't think you'll be trick-or-treating without snow, either. Of course it depends on the area of CO you are looking at but I'm at the foothills and snow happens.

I have a friend that I grew up with in CT who moved out to Colorado probably 15 years ago (he's 45 now). He is extremly active and loves it out there.

He comes "home" less and less every year

I'm interested in Colorado as well. We were given some property in Fort Lupton, but it's just not as pretty as other places in the state, so I'm not sure if I want to plunk down a house and call it good yet. Any thoughts from folks who currently live in that area would be wonderful.

Have you looked into selling the property to move to a section you would like better?

Colorado is so varied in its landscape, perhaps you can narrow it down to what you like to see. Personally I enjoy canyon-type landscaping. I'm about 10 minutes from one canyon and 30 minutes from another one. I don't rock climb, its just what I enjoy looking at.

We have plains, mountains, desert-ish, lush forest, it all depends on what you like to be surrounded by to decide which area to live in.

Now I'm gushing, I love it here.

I live about 20 miles from Ft. Lupton, it may not be as pretty there as other parts of the state, but in an hour or less you can be in the mountains. :toothy:

Yeah, that's what I was considering too. Plus, we could build a house there ourselves and have close to zero debt. Our goal is to have no mortgage.

My mom will be moving to the Fort Collins/Loveland area, at least that is where she is looking right now.

Fort Collins will be more expensive than Loveland as it is a college town and Loveland is more of a "retirement" age community. She may want to check out Johnstown also.

I don't know what kind of price range your mom is looking for, but here is a house I pass on the way to work, it is more acreage, 15 acres tho:

I just LOVE Colorado! :tay: Been here three years and I hope to live here the rest of my life. Just this morning I told my husband that the view of the mountains and Pikes Peak from our front porch looks like a postcard! I am really enjoying the beautiful fall colors too. I can never get enough of the beautiful sky, scenery and the clean air. The cost of living is reasonable and there is LOTS to do here!

A Good-Beautiful-Morning to my fellow Coloradoans!

Next weekend I'm off to Estes to check out the turning leaves for a day. I agree, Loveland is a very good retirement location. And not the "sit and crochet" types necessarily, we have many super-active seniors that put me to shame on their bicycles and with their walking partners, passing me by as I stroll along on the walking trails.

Look out! Scoot over or gramma will run you over. Kidding, I do love it here so much!

I live right near the Colorado/Utah border, and I can say this area of the world is FABULOUS. I do love the ocean, but as far as lifestyle, expenses, and scenery, this area cannot be beat.

I am 43 years old and born and raised in Colorado Springs. I plan on never leaving. There are so many things here to do that people come from all over the world to do and see!
