~I'd never heard of this until I saw it on the Burns and Allen Show today.
I have whipped dried milk powder in a little water but I didn't care for the taste. Does the canned milk have a better taste? Is is similar to whipped cream?~

I had a very wonderful, very frugal Home Ec. teacher in high school (long, long ago!) She taught us to make whipped cream using canned, condensed milk - chill the beaters and bowl (not plastic) in the freezer, have the milk cold, then beat like regular whipped cream. Nothing tastes exactly like "the real thing" but this is pretty good; add a little sugar and a dash of vanilla.

Evaporated milk - has a different taste vs real milk and powdered versions.

Condensed milk - will prob taste better b/c its full of sugar but dont think it will 'whip' like reg heavy cream b/c its like ooey gooey icing?

I remember seeing that infomercial where the lady whipped ice cold skim milk (temp is the key) and got it thick and frothy. My dad fell for the gimmick and bought it. It was basically a hand blender BUT he still uses it to this day  When I tried that skim milk froth - it just tasted nothing like whipped cream regardless if I added sugar and vanilla. Not too long after it sat, it started getting runny.

Im going to guess 'no' but you won't know til you try right? Evaporated milk is thick but the texture and taste may not be what you're hoping for.

~I'm definitely going to have to try it. Real whipped cream is going for $6 a pound now. :thud: I love it so much on summer fruits but not at $6 for 16 ounces!
Canned milk is $.80 or so? I haven't bought any in years.~

Evaporated milk here is almost $2/can :(

Tried to get dad to use that vs Coffeemate for his coffee since it was actual milk. I have both canned milk and coffee cream in the fridge yet he still sticks to Coffeemate :ugh:

~So the next episode described how to do it. Put one cup of evaporated milk in the freezer for 20 minutes or until ice crystals form. Then whip it. Add in 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and sugar to taste. Whip 2 minutes on high speed.
TV is educational!
Hopefully Aldi has it this time of year so I can try it out. ;) ~

My mom did this with evaporated milk in the 1940's and '50's. Chill everything, then whip it up with an eggbeater. It has to be used right away.

Now this definitely sounds like a something I'm gonna be trying soon. :D

I keep evaporated milk on hand...I use it in my coffee...love it in mashed potatoes instead of regular milk or cream...sometimes use it in cake and brownie mixes...I even stretch my gallons of milk with it...so many uses...;)

~I tried this last night and it was great! It had a slight caramel taste which really went nice with the fresh strawberries. Then I put some in my coffee and made instant cappuccino. Delicious!
Even better, I froze what was leftover and it didn't deflate. It tastes almost like ice cream but with a lot less sugar. It will be fantastic on our apple pie later. :sun:
And it only take 3 minutes of my time. So easy!
I paid $.70 for a 12 ounce can at Aldi. 8 ounces of milk, when whipped, made about 2 cups whipped topping.~

Im glad this worked out for you :) If you buy the fat free evaporated milk, I wonder if it would work the same? Keep us posted on how it tastes when you use from the freezer please. I'd be interested to know how it turns out.
